Integrated Webcam not working with Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit XPS 15 L502x

I have a Dell XPS 15 that I purchased in June of 2012.  the machine came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit and I bought it soon after the $15 windows 8 upgrade promotion had started.  I got my Windows 8 download and while visiting the support site I noticed that on the date that Windows 8 was officially released Ell put up drivers for the sound, video, chipset, networking devices, and so forth but Windows 8 does not seem to want to play nice with the integrated Webcam.  Trying to use the Windows 8 Camera application, Skype or anything that has the capability to use the webcam produces a "There is a problem with the camera" or the webcam preview screen will also remain black.  While I know Logitech and other venders Have webcams that are ready for Windows 8 but I don't want to have spend the money unless I have to.  I went to the Dell download software site which allows you to download the software that came with your computer from the factory and when I try to download both versions of the Dell Webcam Software neither one will download despite it telling me that I have at least two download attempts available.  I am beginning to wonder if this particular model has been discontinued.

Hi gbcmedia2012,

Welcome to the Community,

After upgrading to Windows 8 its recommended to uninstall and reinstall Dell Webcam Central Application.

Check if Dell Webcam Central is still installed on your system(Control Panel,Programs and Features). If yes, uninstall it,reboot your system and then try to download and reinstall it from My Dell Downloads(MDD)

If you're not able to redownload it from MDD try this link below to download and reinstall :

www.dell.com/.../DriverDetails

Hope this helps,

Thank You

Your link worked thanks for your help!  Why was this version of the software not available in the MDD area?  I noticed also that a lot of the software in that area is out of date.  For example,  The Roxio Media Creator Starter that came preinstalled with the computer only had a version in the MDD area with a 2010 release date.  Considering that I purchased the computer in June of 2012 I find this discovery very perplexing.

Glad to know it worked.

The link I posted for Webcam Central is not specific to your system model. It can be used on other system models too  and  that is why it is not listed in MDD for your system. The same version of preinstalled software's which came with the system will be listed in MDD.If any updates are available for the software/applications on your system or the ones which you download from MDD ,you will get a notification through Dell Support Center installed on your system.

Hi srinijvasa,

Welcome to the Community,

Yes, you can reinstall Webcam Central from the link in your post.

Also before reinstalling it, access Device Manager, expand Imaging Device and confirm if Webcam is getting detected.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank You

Hello Roshan,

I'm having the same problem. My camera was working on windows 7. But I've upgraded to windows 8 and I'm not able to see my camera on the Imaging Device anymore.

I've a Dell Studio XPS 1340.

Thanks,

Mauro.

Hi Mauro,

Welcome to the Community,

Your system model Dell Studio XPS 1340 is not supported by Dell for Windows 8 upgrade and Dell does not provide Windows 8 drivers for your system. The system may work with Windows 8 but some of the hardware may not function normally.

For more information on Dell Computer Support for Windows 8 Upgrade click here.

About the Webcam, in Device Manager do you see any component listed with yellow question mark, under Other Devices? Have you updated the BIOS on your system?

Thank You

Hi Mauro,

After reinstalling Windows did you reinstall the Dell system software and Chipset driver? If you haven't, then some of the drivers may not install correctly.

Try reinstalling Dell System Software and Chipset driver from the links below:

Dell System Software: lt.dell.com/.../lt.aspx

Chipset: lt.dell.com/.../lt.aspx

After reinstalling above drivers, reboot the system and try reinstalling Webcam Central.

If issue persists you may try flashing the BIOS (even if you're using the latest version A15), and check if system detects the Webcam.

Hi Phalai17,

For Windows 8 operating system, you would need to download and install the Camera App from 'Windows Store Apps'. Once done,

  • From the Start screen, click the 'Camera' tile to open the app
  • If the app asks to use your camera and microphone, choose 'Allow'
  • Adjust the settings, if desired
  • To snap a photo, click anywhere on the screen
  • The camera app saves all your snapped photos and videos in a folder called 'Camera Roll' in your Pictures library

If the issue persists, then try the following steps.

Please check under 'Imaging Devices' in 'Device Manager' and see if the Integrated webcam gets detected. To check webcam in 'Device Manager':

  • Click on “Start” and right click on “Computer”.
  • Click on “Manage”.
  • Click on “Device Manager”.
  • Under “Imaging Devices”, you will find the 'Webcam' listed.
  • Right click and uninstall.
  • Restart and see if it makes any difference.

If issue persists, you may uninstall the USB root hubs and check if it makes any difference. To uninstall USB Root Hubs:

  • Expand ‘Universal Serial Bus controllers’
  • From the list, look for ‘USB Root Hub’
  • Right click, choose ‘Uninstall’, choose ‘Ok’
  • Uninstall all ‘USB Root Hub’ listed
  • Wait for all the drivers to get uninstalled
  • Restarted the computer
  • Restarting the computer will install ‘USB Root Hub’s automatically on the computer

If there is an issue with loose webcam cable, you may press the area near webcam and see if it makes any difference.

You can download and install Webcam software from the following link http://dell.to/18geb7G.

Hi phalai17,

Try the steps suggested by RockSt☆r-Rick K mentioned in this link http://dell.to/14wFzjW. It says to download and install an older version of Skype.
