Internal microphone has never worked, Studio 1535

I cannot make the internal micorphone work on this Studio 1535. It has the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. I have had the laptop for awhile, but never tried to use the mic until now. I have installed the latest BIOS and driver for the IDT. I have tried every setup configuration I can find through the control panel. I would like to use Skype, but cannot. I read some old posts, but nothing helps so far. I'm afraid if I buy a plug-in mic that I will have the same problem. Has a solution for this problem ever been found? Any ideas what to try next? Thanks!

If you have Windows 7 there seems to be a problem with mics working with it. If you have another operating system then take a look at What is the Integrated Webcam and Digital Array Microphone. At the bottom of that page there is a link to a troubleshooting wizard named "Problem with the Integrated Web Camers" Wizard ID 297119. You will be asked to submit the model name of your computer and its operating system, then you can select the type of problem you are having, which is "The microphone is not working". This wizard is a good place to start diagnosing your problem and it will walk you through all of the steps to configure the camera. It will show you how to run the Dell Diagnostics tests on the webcam to find out if the hardware has failed and where to get help if it has.It has the details of the several pieces of software to reinstall if the hardware is okay.

Thanks Jim. I actually have Vista. I'll jump on this suggestion tonight.

Here is my status. I followed the recommended links, installed NSS and Audio driver updates. The internal microphone still did not work on the skype test window. Then a randomly tapped the computer keyboard area and tapped the lid around the web cam. The micorphone test window indicates a functioning mic. i must have a hardware problem with something loose. I'm sure the updates were worthwhile but now I new to fix whatever is loose. Thanks.
