Keyboard and Touchpad not working

i opened Firefox and all of a sudden neither my touch pad or entire keyboard work. I tried hooking up an external mouse and that works fine. I went to the troubleshooting page and it told me that there was an error and that both needed to be re-installed. I can get on to the internet with the external mouse but can not type anything in order to get to a support site. I am here through my desktop. Any hints on how to get them working again.

Hi Postmanlcs54,

It appears system froze while running some applications on computer.

Could you please check if it happen while using different applications on the computer or while specifically running Firefox.

You can also update the touchpad driver of your computer and check if the issue still persists.

  • Click on the below link: http://dell.to/OukFUO
  • Enter the Service Tag of your system and select the operating system.
  • Go to “Input” and click on the touchpad driver.
  • Click on “Download File”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the driver on your desktop.
  • Once the driver is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Follow the prompts on screen and restart your computer.

Another step you can try is to check the keyboard and touchpad functionality in safe mode and see if it exhibits the same behavior there as well.

  • Restart the computer.
  • Tap the F8 key on the keyboard during the boot process until you see the Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen.
  • Select “Safe Mode with Networking” from the menu using the arrow keys on the keyboard and then press the key.
  • Select the user account at the log in screen.
  • Try using your computer and see if the issue persists there.

In case of keyboard, you can disconnect the USB keyboard connected with laptop and then use an Onscreen keyboard to see if the issue persists with that as well.

To use On screen keyboard:

  • Choose Start/Windows logo → Control Panel → Ease of Access → Ease of Access Center.
  • Click the Start On-Screen Keyboard button.
  • Test out the on-screen keyboard input in any application where you can enter text.
  • Click Options, select the Turn on numeric key pad check box, and then click OK.
  • Open a notepad and try typing on that by clicking on the keys of On screen keyboard.

Note: To use keystroke combinations (such as Ctrl+Z), click the first key (in this case, Ctrl) and then click the second key (Z). You don’t have to hold down the first key as you do with a regular keyboard.

Please reply with findings.
