LCD Inverter Detection Test Failure - Lattitude D800 - Error code 1000-0323

Afternoon all.

For the last four days I have been experiencing troubles loading (Windows XP) on my Dell Lattitude D800 AND I've been having problems with the LCD display. Random junk crossing the screen, occasionally a complete loss of register with the appearance of multi-color lines. The initial boot portion of Windows Start-up was however pretty clean and readable.

I initially thought I might be experiencing some form of a malware attack because the update on the screen was taking forever and CPU time would frequently bounce towards 100%. I attempted to run AVGSpware and it got about 40% through my disk  before it froze!

I have been unable to full load my OS - Windows XP and the screen display is a mess!

I ran diagnostics during a boot-up and received an LCD Inverter Detection Test error code 1000-0323. This was accompanied by a beep sequence (3-2-3) which according to listing I have seen for a Phoenix Bios (A13 revision) should be RESERVED!

I would have thought that an LCD Inverter failure would not prevent me from hooking up an external digital monitor, but the desktop updates so slowly, I can't even run routine antivirus or antispyware software?

So is this hardware.. or malware?

Any advice?

I think you've got two separate problems - one is a faulty inverter, and the other is a failing or failed video card.

Thanks. I've gone into save my data mode - popped the disc drive, scanned it for viruses and spyware (found 3 trojans) and am transferring clean data to another machine.

Been on line with the service manual. Plan to take off the display and send it for service.

Once again, thanks!
