Problem is that it can't usually charge the battery and run the laptop at maximum speed. Go ahead and try it, but get some utility that displays CPU speed. You might also get error messages.
Thanks to both of you for your replies. I did some research and decided to order a new adapter from Dell. I know there are cheaper alternatives out there, however, I am concerned they would be of lesser quality and need to be replaced again. Thanks again.

The PA-12 is underpowered and most likely won't be able to charge the battery.

Instead of buying directly from Dell, I usually buy a genuine Dell AC adapter from a USA seller on eBay. Usually get one for 1/2 the price.
