Laptop LCD life

Question

Hi,     Recently I bought a new Dell to replace an older laptop whose LCD screen failed (the backlight seems to have failed since I can still read the screen using a bright external light).  I had the old laptop set up to never turn the screen off when plugged into the power adapter.  So, the screen usually stayed on throughout the day and was shut down throughtout the night.     I am wondering whether this was such a good idea given the failure of the LCD screen after 3 years of using that laptop.  My questions are: 1.    What is the normal life of laptop LCD screens?  Is 3 years of use as above too short or normal for such screens (I have an older laptop that is about 6 years old, and its LCD screen works perfectly.  However, this laptop was used only a few hours a day, not throughout the day). 2.    Is it better to set the power management options so that the screen gets turned off after a little while?  Is life more a factor of how long the screen is on, or is it more dependent on how many times it is turned on and off? 3.    Does the brightness setting affect life in any way?  Will the LCD last longer if I dial down the brightness even when plugged in?

A backlight lamp should last at least 30,000 hours. Yes, brightness affects the bulb life - operating it as you have been doing should be just fine.

Thank you very much.  I certainly did not use my recently deceased laptop LCD screen for 30,000 hours, so it looks like its death was anomalous.  Here is to hoping that the new laptop's screen lasts at least as long as it is supposed to.
