Laptop Power Jack Started Smoking

Question

I recently (well 2 or 3 weeks ago actually) found my old Dell Laptop in my garage.  I had already lost my charger (probably broken somewhere) and i thought i might try and use this laptop again. I believe its about 1 or 2 years old, so anyway i looked on the back for the version, (PP01L) and ordered the adapter. I got the charger today and was all ready to plug this in and mess around with it and poof the power jack immediately started smoking! I unplugged the charger as fast as i can and kept the laptop away from any of my burnable things. It didnt set on fire just left a bad smell in my room (it was only white smoke by the way)   I then cautiously plugged in the charger  again and it started smoking again, just not as bad. I unplugged it. let it air out, came back about 20 minutes later and plugged in the charger and it didnt smoke. Problem is, it still didnt turn on. i knew most likely the battery was already dead, but dont laptops run on power from the wall too? so i was thinking that would work, but the charger light doesn't light up and the laptop just doesnt turn on. I promptly pulled out the charger again and proceeded to look for a solution.   I'm thinking myself that it might be fried, and also i was wondering whether i can take the processor and the Ram and put it in my desktop computer ( It really needs new parts ._.) i read i COULD put the laptop processor in my computer if it fit the right specifications. But i have no way of knowing what type of processor the laptop has unless ic an turn it on. Nor the ram.   The Laptop is a Dell laptop PP01L, the charger is the exact voltage, version, and everything that is supposed to go with it. so i know its not the charger. Like i said i THINK the power jack could be fried but i'd love some help on this.   and yes i know its an old laptop...

Also the Desktop is OLD

3200+ AMD Sempron Processor

512 MB Ram

100 GB hard drive

Integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 200 (Now replaced with a 6200 geforce graphics card)

and that also reminds me, can i get my laptops graphics card?

You can not use the processor or the RAM in a desktop. They are not compatible. The laptop is probably fried beyond repair. Time to buy a new machine.

Any one of a number of components may have failed - this is a notebook that's 10 years old -- not one or two years old.
