Follow Windows Reinstallation Guide/A Clean Install of Windows 7:

http://philipyip.wordpress.com/dell-community-forums/

Back up the Dell OEM Product Activation using the Activation Backup and Recovery Program and carry out the install using a 32 bit .iso from Digital River. Once installed restore the Dell OEM Product Activation using the Activation Backup and Recovery Program.

Hi Wave,

Dell Latitude E5510 comes with 64 bit Processors you can install 64 bit or 32 bit operating system on it.
As you have informed that you are able to install operating system on it and later when you are updating the drivers the system crashes. I would like to know during which driver updating is the system crashing. Please refer to the link below for correct order for installing the drivers on the computer after operating system reinstallation.

Also, I’d suggest you to run the diagnostics on the computer by following the steps mentioned below and check if there is any issue with the hardware on your system.

  1. Turn on or restart the computer.
  2. Immediately at the Dell logo screen, starting tapping the key once a second until the One Time Boot menu appears (if the computer boots to Windows turn the computer off and try again).
  3. At the One Time Boot menu, press the arrow key to highlight Diagnostics, PSA+ or Enter ePSA, then press to begin the PSA.
  4. Write down any error codes listed. Reply to us with the error codes.

Dell does not ship any factory recovery discs for systems. There is a ‘Dell DataSafeLocal Backup’ application installed in the system wherein you could create recovery discs and restore the system to factory state when needed as you have replaced the hard drive our support have sent you operating system disc as one time exception.

Thanks to all for replying. I will read over all the restore guides provided.

The old HD crashed so there is no chance of creating a restore disk from it or recovering the Windows license key. I would  hope the 64 bit version I got will have a key built into it?

Attempt 1 to restore the OS: Installed from the Dell restore usb drive. All went well. I installed 2 Intel chip set drivers, probably not in the correct order. The laptop wouldn't reboot.

Attempt 2 to restore the OS: Installed from the restore usb drive. All went well. I did NOT install any drivers. I installed 141 Windows updates. It would not reboot.

I will run the diags that have been recommended later today and let you know. I don't recall seeing PSA or ePSA on the screen but will look for it.

Oh, by the way: The Dell 64 bit usb restore drive, when I launch it, the first thing it says is: This may not work on the platform we're attempting to restore to. What's up with that?

Thanks again to everyone...

Also, I was thinking about updating the BIOS from A04 to the latest but it told me I couldn't do that. I'd have to update to A10 first, but A10 isn't on the download list... Go figure...

The laptop passed all the diagnostics. It couldn't work with the diagnostic partition because there isn't one. I don't know if this recover and repair USB key creates that. So far, this USB key doesn't seem worth the money I paid for it. Come on Dell, sell me the correct product!!

Heres the direct link to A10: http://ftp.dell.com/bios/E5510A10.EXE

A diagnostics CD/USB can be created using this utility here: http://ftp.dell.com/diags/CW1394A0.exe this will allow you to run the complete diagnostics without the partition being present.

or recovering the Windows license key. I would  hope the 64 bit version I got will have a key built into it?

Both will work using the Dell System locked Preinstallaiton Key. See Windows Reinstallation Guide page 293 for more details:

There is also a unique 25 digit product key on the COA likely found in the battery compartment in the rare case that the above doesn't work.

Thanks so much for the BIOS link. I've updated to the latest revision of A15.

Getting ready to run the  Dell system analyzer.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Outdated BIOS appears to have been the problem. Once I got the BIOS up to A15, there hasn't been a problem restarting, installing updates, installed new drivers, McAfee. All is well... so far..

Thanks,

Wave
