Welcome to the Community. As per Dell's Manuals the Latitude D420 will support a maximum of 2.5 GB. The memory type is 533 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. There is 512 mb fixed onboard memory.
I have just installed a 2GB memory to my Dell D420. During boot-up, it gave out warning about the memory size being changed. After entering Setup screen, I noticed that the installed memory was 2.5G but the available memory was 2GB, somehow the 0.5GB was set side for the system. Once it boot to XP, I looked up the system info and noticed that the memory size was 1.99GB. Not sure about that 0.5GB. But I am still happy.
