I am having the same problem where I work. We have about 20 Lattitude D630s that are doing the same thing. They work fine on the battery, but the BIOS nor the display properties power meter see the battery. It says it is on AC power. Could someone PLEASE help!!!
I too am having a similar problem with my Latitude D410 Laptop. The battery will charge and hold it but not for very long. The machine seems to think that it is always on AC power when its not, and if I am working on battery power there is no warning as to when it will it will hibernate due to loss of battery power. This is a non-Dell replacement battery but I don't necessarily think that is the problem and dont really want to have to buy another one to find out. I tried resetting the bios but the directions were less than stellar so who knows if I did it right. Dell Forums have worked for me in the past so maybe it will work again? Thanks.
I'm having the same exact problem. D620 runs fine on its battery only, but neither Windows Power applet nor the BIOS will recognize that there's any battery installed. Would really like some advice from Dell on this, since you can't even flash the BIOS unless the machine recognizes that a battery is installed. Thanks, Chashood
Genuine Dell batteries have some sort of circuitry inside them which identify them as a "real" Dell battery. Sometimes this circuitry can burn out or otherwise break. Google this topic. You will need to buy another Dell battery.
I bought a used D520 on eBay, and the seller had a replacement battery that was not Dell. Everytime I rebooted, I get a warning message telling me to use a real Dell battery. I am now buying a used but working Dell battery on eBay.
It's the Dell-branded original battery, fully charged (and the machine runs fine for quite a while on the battery, so I know the battery at least holds a charge; it's just that the BIOS and Windows Power mgt. won't recognize it). I can't find any evidence of bent, dirty, or broken contacts when removing and reinstalling the battery. I don't have a spare to swap out to see if that's the problem, but buying a replacement battery is my next step if nobody comes up with a better solution. Thanks, Chashood
I recently observed the same issue and not seeing a solution so far. This unit is five years plus and the problem just started. We are unable to update the bios as well. Shows the AC adapter whether it is plugged in or not but no battery nor the charge rate. Any solutions would be appreciated. The site shows A12 as the current and only bios! The Lat says 4!

i just bought a new battery from one of the dell company called laptop-services. i bought a new battery to replace a non function one for my dell latitute D620.... and i dont know what seems to be the matter.. the latop recognises the battery but the battery is not being charged.. how can i resolved this issue?
We need to assume the original battery did not charge because it had failed. If this is the case then the new battery if correct replacement should charge. You should try some additional steps. Update the bios, do a system reset by removing the battery and AC adapter, no power to the unit, hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Then replace the battery and AC to the unit. Now turn on and observe whether you get a charging battery. Check in control panel under power and see what the battery is doing.
Be sure charging is turned on in the bios! Warranty. Keep in mind batteries usually just carry a one year warranty even thought the laptop might have two or three, also if you buy a new one while this is rare it can be defective and check the warranty on it. Again we are assuming the original battery has failed and this may not be true depending on the checks you did. You might also go into the control panel and see if the battery is recognized there.
iI have a Dell LATITUDE D620 , with same/ similar problem. With ac charger unplugged, operating on battery - the task bar ( bottom RHS) shows "On AC power".
The computer BIOS is A1.
The battery shows full charge - all lights when the button is pressed.
