Latitude E5500 Dim Screen

Shortly after upgrading to Windows 10 the screen on my Latitude E5500 became dim.  I have set brightness to the max but, in fact, as I slide up and down the brightness bar, there is no discernible difference.  Is there a fix for this that I can implement, or does the screen require replacement?

Hi casalewis,

Firstly, this system is not compatible to work with W10. Hence, Dell would not release any W10 drivers for this model - see this link - http://dell.to/1IY61ES

Now, the brightness issue you are facing is usually caused by the video drivers. Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - see if the brightness functionality works in BIOS. If yes, then the video driver is the suspected source.

You could try reinstalling the video drivers from Intel site - http://intel.ly/1TbxV6Y - in compatibility mode for Win 7 -see this link on how to - http://bit.ly/1Tixfax

However, please note that there is a good chance that it might not work on your system or might fix the brightness issue temporarily or cause an entirely new issue.

My suggestion, is to downgrade the OS back to W7 / W8.1 for full system functionality - see this link on how to - http://bit.ly/1MeFV1d

Keep us updated.

Thank you!  The iffyness of messing with the drivers caused me to go directly into recovery.  My screen is back and all seems to be as it was.

You can resolve by going into the BIOS and disabling ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) Then the screen will not be automatic with the surroundings, but you can control via Windows or the Fn keys.

TIP, make sure you update BIOS before you upgrade to Win 10 cause the BIOS updates do not run in Win10.

Thank you for your input.  My screen went dim following the upgrade to Win 10.  Following Rishi's advice, and based on the fact that the E5500 is not compatible with Win 10, I have reverted to Win 7 Ultimate and everything seems to be as it was.

I left Windows 10 upgrade (32 bit) on my system.  I went into the BIOS and turned off the Ambient Light Sensor and turned both settings (battery and AC) to 100%.  Now I wish I had made one change at a time.  My error.

My screen is a bright now as my old external monitor and is now usable.  I don't mind adjusting it manually.   Thanks for that suggestion.
