Manufacturing mode Level 01 message

Hi,

since a few days ago my DELL Latitude D610 behaves out of normal:

1.I see often the message:

'****Manufacturing Mode Level [01]*****

Press Fn-X to return to normal mode'

before windows starts

Pressing the Fn+X keys allows the system to boot up normally but the notification reappears eventually.

2. often the blower on the left hand side of the laptop runs continously. Sometimes the laptop starts with the fan working regular.

3. unexpected shutdown of the laptop occurs

4. eventually I can not enter the BIOS because it is not shown when starting the laptop.

5. Battery error message and orange blinking of the battery symbol showed up twice the past 3 days. Battery seems to work OK, Charge level is OK. Once the system recovered by itself from this error. Another time I removed the battery and reinstalled it again.

All errors occur since the notification

'****Manufacturing Mode Level [01]*****

Press Fn-X to return to normal mode'

appeared for the first time.

The date and time are shown correctly so it is not related to a dying motherboard the battery.

Does any one out there can help me to further diagnose this odd behaviour?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Hi Latitude7l4dm1j,

Welcome to the Community. If you are able to boot into the operating system I would suggest you to update your Bios using the below link. If are able to get into the bios reset it back to the default settings, if both of this does not fix it, contact Dell Technical Support in your region, it could be a faulty motheboard.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R109538&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D610&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=6983&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=4&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=0&libid=1&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=142505

Hope this helps

Thank you

Hi Royan,

thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately I made a mistake with the model:

I have a Latitude D810, not a D610, sorry for the Type-o.

Updating the BIOS to newest A05 Revision didn't help, nor did the BIOS resetting with ALT-F.

Meanwhile the Manufacturing mode level numbers keep updating.

Meanwhile I get more manufacturing mode notifications like:

Level [FF] or Level [63] or Level [80] or Level [57] alterating with the Level [01] after restarting the Laptop (just restart, no power off and on again).

After powering down the laptop and starting it up again with the power button, the systems runs in normal mode for the rest of the day.

I also observe that the CPU Fan is running with high speed when the manufacturing mode message is displayed. If I continue working with the laptop after the message is displayed, the Laptop shuts down eventually. After restart, I can read that the computer has been shut down due to an unexpected temperature increase.

Time and date are still OK, no hints that the Mainboard battery has failed.

I have contacted DELL Support and they say the message is rather unknown (which is a bit worrying since I see this concerns only DELL computers, so they should know best). However, they nail it down to a failing main board, too, either due to a bad NVRAM or a Graphics adapter failure, depending which technician is picking the call. Accordind to DELL, the board must be installed and flashed by a Field Service Tech, making it rather expensive to replace.

They suggest to get a new computer. Probably the better option but I'll keep chasing this error for a longer while. I'll have a closer look to the board and see wheter it helps reseating some components and plugs and maybe someone comes up with more idea.

Regards,
