Max memory in an Inspiron 8200

Hi,

I have a 6 year old 8200, and would like to expand the memory from 1gb to 4gb.

Is it possible to do this, will the motherboard  recognize and use it???

Dell's chat session person said the motherboard has a 1gb limit.  that doesn't make any sense.

Thanks in advance.

Your motherboard is old and is from long before laptop computers could handle 4 gigs. Dell was right--1 gb is the max. Save your money for a new laptop. You can get one now for less than $500. Your motherboard has 2 slots with a 512mb capacity each. Look HERE. Believe Crucial.

"Q: Can I put 2 GB of RAM in my I8200?

The Dell documentation says that the I8200 can only have a maximum of 1 GB of RAM. However, some I8200 owners have put 1 GB Modules in their systems for a maximum of 2 GB of memory. You can order them from Dell here. Or from Crucial here. In September 2004, I got two "KINGMAX 200-Pin 1GB DDR SODIMM PC-2100, Model MSDD42D-KI" modules from NewEgg.com and they have been running fine ever since. I paid $193 for each module. Corsair ValueSelect 1GB DDR333 modules (p/n VS1GSDS333) are verified to work in the Inspiron 8200 in 2GB and lower configurations.

Q: Are you sure the Inspiron 8200 can take memory modules greater than the Dell published 512K maximum?

I was leary about trying to install 1 GB memory modules but since I required that additional memory I had to try it. So I pulled out a 512K module and installed a 1GB module. I was amazed it worked without any effort. The computer started up and immediately recognized the memory and I did not have to do anything else. It was simply there and in use, period! I bought the memory from Best Buy for $69.99 in the Fall of 2008. The 1GB memory is by Kingston Technology--PC2700 DDR SoDIMM notebook memory model KVR333SO/1GR. It operates at 333MHZ and is 200 pin, non-ECC SoDIMM. Now that I have the additional memory, I wish there was some way to upgrade the CPU processing speed."
