Maximum RAM
I purchased a Dell Inspiron 17R (N7110) several years ago and it came with 12GB of RAM installed in it.. It was a refurbished laptop straight from Dell.com so I know without a doubt that it can handle more than 8GB of RAM. I've always wanted to upgrade the memory to my absolute maximum of 32GB. I just couldn't afford it. So why does Dell keep saying that this laptop can only use 8GB when mine is using 12GB? Oh! I almost forgot, I have Windows 8.1 Pro installed on it with an Intel Core i5 3rd generation processor. The hard drive is 750GB as well. What makes mine different? IDK.

If 12 worked, 16 should (but there are no guarantees, as the system is officially specified to support 8G total).
There's almost no conceivable way 32G will work. If you decide to try that be sure you either have another use for the RAM, or understand your vendor's return policy - as it is very likely not to work.
