Hello Prashant. It is difficult to give you hard facts because you did not provide enough information. Please reply back and tell us

> the full model name of the laptop . (By full name I mean don't just say the series name, such as Inspiron 15, because there are many quite different models within that series. )

It would also be interesting if you would tell us who is doing the repair, Dell or a local technician, and who told you that the sound with the replaced hardware will be lower quality.

Without knowing more it is hard to say much, but it would be rare for both the jack mic and the internal mic to have hardware failure at exactly the same time, because they do not share mic hardware.

Hello Jim,

Thank you for the reply. The laptop I am referring is Dell - Inspiron 15 - 3251.

Initially the jack less mic started not to function and then after some time the jacked mic started to mis-function. I had given the laptop to the local technician and that guy suggested the quality of sound will not match the original one.

I have now taken back the laptop without any repair since the new hardware which he had installed was not recording sound even if I was talking without jack mic from a feet away from the screen.

I hope this information helps.

Thank you,

Prashant.

Inspiron 15 - 3251.

There is not a 3251 model so I assume you mean you have a 3521. The internal mic in that model is in the camera (above the display screen), so to replace the mic you would replace the camera. Dell does not supply replacement parts so parts come from scrapped laptops. Here is an example of the camera for sale from a reputable parts dealer:

If the local technician replaced the camera in your laptop with a working one from another 3521, it should have the same quality as the original camera mic, if he performed the work correctly.

The same thing goes for the audio jack socket in your laptop; however, the jack was not meant to be a replaceable part, so to replace the jack might require some tricky work on the motherboard. I don't know how difficult it would be to replace the jack. It is possible that the only way to replace the jack is to replace the entire motherboard.

The external (jack) mic in your laptop will not work unless you have the Realtek audio driver installed. If you are using the Windows native audio driver the external mic will not work.

I'm a newbie....maybe in the wrong place!

I have an oldie but goodie Inspiron 9400. Does it have an internal mic? If not, what inexpensive unit do you suggest? I want to use it for speech to text application.

Thanks in anticipation.  Pete

Hello Pete. Your question is off-topic for this thread but we'll let it go this time (joke!).

The Inspiron 9400 did not have a built-in mic. I don't have a specific recommendation for an external one. I would search for "laptop mic" on Amazon and pick a cheap one that has good reviews. You can use one that plugs into the mic jack or a usb one.
