-Windows 5.1 Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
-System BIOS Version: DELL - 27d40a12
-Inpiron 5100, 15.0 XGA, 2.4GHz-P4 (221-1884)

I've replaced the Hard Drive and the RAM with improvement.  I've updated every driver off the Dell website and I've updated the BIOS to the latest version.

It seems once I get the computer actually stable for and hour, it performs flawlessly.  It is the initial startup that takes so much time.  I have to restart the computer over and over again.

Please help.  Dell tech support hasn't been very helpful yet.

Dave

Check the condition of the heatsink - this model is well known for overheating.

Also run the Dell diagnostics, particularly on the RAM and the hard drive (including a full surface scan of the latter).

I've run the full diagnostics off the CD.  I've run every hard drive diagnostic Dell gave to me.  I even replaced the hard drive.

The problem occured before and after replacing the RAM and the hard drive.

I don't think it is an overheating problem for it happens when the computer is first starting up, not after being on for a while.  In fact, once it has been started it will run all day with no glitches.

Does that make sense?

So what do you think my upgrade options would be with my computer?  If I'd have to replace the motherboard anyway I might as well replace it with an upgraded version.  What are my options on a 5100?

I watched a tech replace a board today.  Looked simple.  I just need parts.

Got a new one today.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

****USBPORT.SYS - ADDRESS F81D8073 base at F81D0000, Date Stamp 41107d62.

Haven't gotten that one before.

Something interesting happened today that reminded me of something else.

I tipped up my computer to read the service tag and at that point the computer went to a blue screen of death and then went to a black screen.  I restarted the computer and I've had no other concerns today.

I remember this happening many other times but I forgot to mention that.  This tells me I have some hardware issue.

But what?

And where are my suggestions for upgrades I can make to my 5100 when I replace the mother board?  A guy told me today that I can put my hard drive in pretty much any dell laptop and it will work if I erase all the drivers ahead of time.

Thanks for any help you guys provide.

Another new issue.

I turn on my computer expecting my initial crashes and they come as expected, except they don't come as blue screens.  The first crash was just a lockup of my desktop.  When I restarted I got my second crash that I'd never seen before.  I didn't even get to the windows screen for this crash.  The screen stayed black and then I got this message:

What the heck does that mean?
