Mute Stuck

This is the most bizarre thing I've had happen. My mute on my computer is stuck. No, the button isn't stuck. It's just stuck in mute. I try to unmute it, and it works for about a minute, then goes back to not working. I've tried re-starting my computer, and basically everything I can think of, but to not avail.
Help!?!?

I have a similiar problem. Since some time my mute is switched on and off and on and off even when I am not doing anything.

My system is a XPS M170 which worked fine for almost 2 years now. I tried reinstalling Windows XP without any help. But I think this must be a software problem. The mute button is not stucked and I can use it normally (but will be overruled by this on off thing). When switching the "normal" on screen idicated which can be seen using the mute button is not display so it must have a different source.

I tried reinstalling DirectX, Sigmatel Drivers .... but still have thus problem.

Any ideas?
