My Del Vostro 1015 automatically restarts

Hi,

I have a Dell Vostro 1015.

For last 3 days it is behaving differently. Most of the times when I am trying to start the machine, it is opening properly and then it is getting restarted automatically. I did not quite understand what is happening.

Could you please help me resolving this issue?

With regards,

Hi Dibyendu Chakraborty,

Based on the given description the problem could be with the hardware or software of the computer.

Running the hardware diagnostics can help in checking if there is any hardware problem. Follow the steps below to run hardware diagnostics.

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Keep tapping the F12 key on the Dell Logo Screen.
  3. From the One time boot menu select Diagnostics and Press Enter.
  4. It runs a test on all the hardware components.
  5. If it test fails please capture the error code and let me know the error code, I would tell you the next course of action.

In case the test passes, follow the next steps. Check in Safe Mode with Networking.

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Keep tapping F8 on the Dell Logo Screen.
  3. Once the computer enters Advanced Boot Option, select Safe Mode with Networking.
  4. Press Enter.

Check if the computer is restarting automatically in Safe mode with networking.

If the issue persists, kindly check the option of Disable automatic restart.

Below steps would help you in unchecking Automatic restart:

  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click Advanced system settings.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. In the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings.
  5. Click to clear the Automatically restart check box.
Now restart the computer and check if the computer restarts.

Please post the results for further help.

Hi Nikhil,

I checked the first two options, and I found there are no hardware problems. And even I tried to login with safe mode with networking. I could login in that way also. I could not try your third option which is disabling the automatic restart. I will try that today probably.

It did not restart yesterday in the middle.

Waiting for your suggestions.

Hi Nikhil,

Yes, there are some hardware changes. I had to install a USB LAN card and after that only I faced this restart issue.

So, is it the problem of the same? Do I need to change it.

I did a system resource before you suggested this. But restart case happened even after that.

But please let me know whether this USB LAN caused the problem.

Regards,

Dibyendu

Hi Dibyendu,

We can check if the issue was caused by any program. Kindly install the” Crash analysis tool” from the link: http://bit.ly/QN41G

After installing click on analyze and let us know the end results.

Hi,

I talked to Dell service and checked with dell's engineer (paid) but I did not get a clear cut solution. First I was told to run a fixhdd.exe to clear and debug the hdd which was done succesfully but after that also the machine was hanging very frequently. Then I was asked to change the hard drive, I did that again, still the problem happens. I am really frustrated and disappointed as I did not get any proper solution.

Can anybody from you please help me? can there be any problem with the BIOS? with the motherboard?

please help me.

Hi Dibyendu,

Is there any temperature rise in the laptop, before it restarts?

If the fans are not spinning normally or spinning high more frequently than normal, I would suggest you to update the latest BIOS for the system. Please follow the below mentioned steps:

  1. Click this link: http://dell.to/17F08dH
  2. Enter the service tag of the system, and select Drivers and Downloads tab.
  3. Select the operating system from the dropdown and download the latest version of BIOS listed under BIOS category.
  4. Ensure to connect the AC Adapter to the computer and the Battery Charge is above 15%.
  5. Close all the open programs and make sure to save all the data in the computer.
  6. Run the previously downloaded BIOS setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to update the BIOS.
  7. Restart the computer when prompted.

Also, refer this link for troubleshooting the fans and air vents: http://dell.to/101noJK

Please check the functionality of the system and post the results.

Hi Dibyendu,

As you mentioned earlier in your previous post that the problem started after installing the USB LAN card, I would like to know if you have installed the USB LAN card drivers. Also let me know the model# of the USB LAN card and operating system installed.

Awaiting your response!

Hi Dibyendu,

Were the drivers for USB LAN card removed from the system? If not use this link to uninstall the unwanted drivers in the system: http://dell.to/18zYJ9W

Install the software and uninstall the program using the Advanced Uninstall option from the software. It is third party uninstaller software used to uninstall the drivers/programs from the computer, install it only if necessary.

The software prompts asking you to delete the Registry keys corresponding to the program. Select all and delete them. Restart the computer to remove any traces of the program software.

Please post the results.
