My USB 3.0 ports are malfunctioning

Can you please help me with my laptop?

2 USB 3.0 ports on the left is working fine.

But the farther-most USB on the right serves as power supply only, no data transmission whatsoever.

Is there a way to check if my nearest USB port on the right (and 2 USB ports on left) performs as USB 3.0?

I suspect I have wrong USB 3.0 drivers installed? Please show me link to correct driver.

My Info...

Inspiron 15R SE 7520
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

Thank you.

Hi Rocker711,

Please check if the USB ports are enabled in the BIOS. Here are the steps:

  • Restart / Power on your computer.
  • At the first text on the screen or when the Dell™ logo appears, tap until the message Entering Setup appears.
  • In the setup, scroll to Advanced -> Miscellaneous Devices -> External USB Ports.
  • Select Enable, save the settings and exit.

Install the latest drivers for chipset and USB 3.0 from the given links:

  • Chipset drivers: http://dell.to/1bHc3Xr
  • USB 3.0 Drivers :  http://dell.to/1bHanxn.
  • Click “Download File” and save the file on desktop.
  • Run the downloaded file and restart the system for the changes to take effect.

Check for functionality.

Hope this helps.

Please feel free to reach out for further assistance.

Thank you Garima G.

About the links, do I download all 2 files in each link there?

Or are the 2 files in each link the same?

Hi Rocker711,

Both files on those links are same. You may download the first one and install it on the system.

  • Click “Download File” and save the file on desktop.
  • Run the downloaded file and restart the system for the changes to take effect.

Keep me posted with the results. I’ll be glad to assist.

Thank you for your response, Ms. Garima G.

Right rear-most USB port is still not working -- it can easily turn-on my laptop cooling fan.

But when I plug my wireless dongle, my optical mouse still doesn't respond.

Specs says 3 USB 3.0 + 1 USB 3.0 PowerShare,

What does PowerShare mean? Will it only be supplying power, but not data?

Maybe that is the way it's supposed to be?

But accompanying diagram shows USB 3 with PowerShare is on the left side.

Please clarify.

Hi Rocker711,

Please confirm if you are using a wireless mouse or a wired USB mouse with the system.

Power share USB port provides power to the external devices even when the system is powered off. It does supply data when the computer is powered on.

Keep me posted. I’ll be glad to assist.

Hi Ms. Garima G.

Yes I do use a wireless optical mouse. But I also tested some USB flash and hard drives with that rear right USB3 port -- all nothing.

It's only good now for powering up my laptop cooling fan. That's what it's good at right now, power supply.

It has been like this since I bought this laptop online.

Hi Rocker711,

Please uninstall the USB port drivers from the device manager and restart the system. Here are the steps:

  • Press ‘Windows’ key + R on ‘Desktop’ screen
  • Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ in run box and press ‘Enter’
  • Click > or + sign next to “Universal Serial Bus controllers” in Device Manager to expand the options.
  • Right-click on the option “USB Root Hub” and then left click on “Uninstall”.
  • Repeat for all the options which say “USB Root Hub”.
  • Restart your system.

Once done, please check for functionality.

Update the latest BIOS from the link http://dell.to/17LscIl .

  • Click “Download File” and save the file on desktop.
  • Run the downloaded file and restart the system for the changes to take effect.

Once the BIOS is updated, please update the drivers for chipset, given in the previous post.

Please check for functionality,

Awaiting your response.

Hi again Ms. Garima G.

I followed your instructions to the letter, and carefully.

Unfortunately, the USB 3.0 port on the right-most rear is still not working.

I tested all 4 USB ports, only the 3 ports are working.

I tested all ports with the following:

  • USB flash drive
  • USB wireless mouse
  • external hard drive

Only the USB 3.0 port on the right-most rear is still not working. Still, it supplies only USB power, like before.

Hi Rocker711,

It seems to be a hardware issue.

Please share the system's Service Tag and Owner's/Company's Name with me via private message (click my username and then click Start Conversation). I’ll check and see what best can be done.

Keep me posted. I’ll be glad to assist.
