NVIDIA graphics card not detected

Hi, I bought an alienware M17x in 2011 with Nvidia geforce GTX 560M that has had no problems until now. It's not coming up in device manager only the intel graphics card is and when i click on the nvidia control panel it says nvidia display settings are not available, an nvidia graphics card is not detected in your system. Can someone help please?

Hi Sarzi,

I recommend you to flash BIOS from the link given below:

http://dell.to/QjjZDA

Enter the service tag and click ‘Submit’. In the next page click BIOS and download the latest version.

Note: While flashing BIOS connect the Ac adapter and make sure the battery has minimum 15% charge as this needs uninterrupted power supply. Do not use the system till it restarts and comes up to the desktop.

Check if the device is detected in the Device manager. If it is not listed under Display Adapters, check if it is listed under Other Devices.

Reply with the status. If possible provide the screen shot of the device manager.

Hi Sarzi,

Thank you for the screenshot.

Please check if the system is detecting the Video card. Restart the system and at Dell logo tap the F2 key every two seconds to boot into BIOS.  In the BIOS on the main screen check if NVidia GeForce GTX 560M by Discrete Graphics is listed.

If it is not listed, send me a private message with the system service tag to check the system details. Click on my name and click Start Conversation to send me a private message.

Hi charonbond,

It is the same F2 key at start up to get to BIOS screen even in Windows 8 Operating system.

If for some reason F2 on startup doesn't work for you (you have to be pretty quick about it) Read this article HERE for other options which you can access from within the OS itself to accomplish the same thing.

@Sarzi while under the "Device Manager" screen that you took your screen shot from, select "View" from the Menu Bar and then chose "Show Hidden Devices"  see if the device appears where it should after you turn on this option. If it does you can then "Right Click" on it and select properties from there you can see what state it's in and the error code on why it's not being detected properly.

Cheers

EDIT:

I won't take credit and I'll give credit where it is do by posting the solution to your issue HERE.

Summary:

Delete the "PCI Express Root Port" device.
Re-add it.
Unknown Video Device will now show up in Device Manager
Install Dell's Nvidia Video Driver.

Suggest you Create a System Restore Point 1st just in case: From Windows 8 Start screen just type "Restore Point" on the search screen panel on the right select "Settings" then chose "Create System Restore Point"

Also suggest, it wouldn't hurt to create a Full System Backup and ensure that you can do a Full system Restore if needed.

Cheers

Hope this helps.

u hav to giv to dell service center the problem may be due lossening of graphic hardware with the pc or you are using 3rd party diver installation for pci who cannot detect it

if the connection between hardware is loosen they can fix or even you can fix it
