This is usually only a common problem on the N5010 when the RAZER SURROUND module is installed. Something about the 2 together produce intermittent and shifting default audio device selections in the Playback controls.

Right Click on the speaker Icon in your system tray.

Select Playback Devices

Make sure that the SPEAKERS are set to default device by right clicking and making the selection

if necessary reboot. If audio comes back immediately you should be fine..if not restart.

If this problem is due to the RAZER SURROUND module being installed on this system it is my HIGHEST recommendation that it be uninstalled unless you enjoy repeatedly adjusting the output device from you playback devices panel. Razer hasn't fixed it and I don't think IDT will either.

If it becomes necessary to troubleshoot your Audio device/s I recommend going through JIMCO's  LAPTOP AUDIO FAQ guide.

This is more system specific than the Microsoft / Windows solutions recommended in the previous post.

I also want to point out that Microsoft is slowly phasing out the "FIXIT" automated troubleshoot/repair. They have admittedly found that running these often fixes the problem at hand but inadvertently causes other problems. For now your best bet is to perform the troubleshoot manually.

Each of the links in Laptop Audio FAQ is a resource in step by step layout that will enable you to restore audio on you device except in worst case scenario where a hardware fault is the cause.

It seems that the drivers may have corrupted.

You can try re-installing the drivers from the below mentioned link and also follow the below mentioned steps if the issue persists:

N7U, way huge thanks for suggesting the Laptop Audio FAQ's as a resource. I am busy today but stopped to reply to your suggestion. The most appropriate FAQ for the issue described in this thread is the one named "No Audio". However I have that faq down at the moment for re-writing so it is not available.

My suggestions would be

> to try Windows System Restore as oldaberunner did.

> reinstall the IDT audio driver as GuruAid advised. Oldaberunner said he or she updated -- not sure if that involved got a fresh copy of the files if he or she already has the latest version.

> It could also be useful to try using the native windows audio driver.

Oldaberunner wants to know if it is a hardware issue. The easiest way to determine that is to run the audio tests in Dell 32-bit Diagnostics if the original hard drive is still on the machine and has never been wiped. The N5010 was one of the last models to have Dell 32-bit Diagnostics, but if it is missing the next best thing is to do a System Recovery. The other diagnostic programs are not definitive in distinguishing between a hardware and software failure.

I was not familiar with the RazerSurround issue you mentioned. Thanks for posting that.
