Non-functional DOS Games/FM Devices driver on ESS Maestro 2E
I recently loaded Win98SE on a Latitude CPx H, along with the drivers that support.dell.com recommends for video and audio. The audio is a ESS Maestro 2E.
The ESS Maestro 2E driver has added "aecu.sys" and "maestro.com" file in c: (it never said it was doing so, let alone offering a chance to put the files in a subdirectory, as it should have) and added entries to config.sys and autoexec.bat. When the autoexec.bat runs its command, "c:\maestro.com", the result is:
"incorrect resource assignment".
Once Windows has booted, almost all seems well. There are 4 sound devices listed in device manager, 3 of which appear to be working (ESS Device Manager, ESS Multi-Device Enumerator and Maestro Wave/Wave Table Synthesis Devices), but one of which is not working -- Maestro DOS Games/FM Devices.
("Windows stopped responding while attempting to start this device, and therefore will never attempt to start this device again. (Code 11.)"
Everything that I use seems to be working fine, but having extra files in c: is a pain (especially ones that don't work), as is having exclamation marks against drivers on a newly installed system. What should I do to get rid of the errors?
