Since you aren't having problems with DA.I or CIV BE I doubt that you have hardware issues with the GPU.  DA.I can be as demanding as Witcher 2 so if there is a hardware issue you should be seeing problems with the other games.

Looks like you have done a good deal of troubleshooting.  One thing that I suggest is make sure that when gaming that you have the AC adapter plugged in if possible.  I also suggest going into the Nvidia Control panel to adjust Optimus settings under 3d graphics and configure your games profiles to run under "high performance".

Please let me know of the problem continues.

Thank you for the hints. I have done everything you suggested, but unfortunately  it did not help.

Still, this is where things get surreal - afterwards, I downloaded and installed Windows 8.1 (had been using 8 until then), and that helped. Following the installation, all the games I had had problems running began to function again. Judging from that, it was a software issue, but I still do not understand what was the root cause of it.

In any case, the problem has been solved.

I am glad to read that you are able to play all your games now after upgrading to 8.1.   If you do start to notice problems again think back if there was any new software installed just prior to the performance issues returned.
