PCMCIA Slot not working
I have Netgear MA401(16 bit) and also US Robotics 2410. None of them work on my Inspiron 4100. They do work on other laptops. When I insert the wireless card, sometimes the system crashes (blue screen). Sometimes it does not crash, but the card is not detected. I have not used the PCMCIA slot for any other purpose. So not sure if it has some problem. Can anybody comment on how I can trouble shoot and fix the problem? What are the probable causes ?

Paste the text below into notepad and save as UNPATCH.REG
Then double click on the file to import into the registry. Cardbus cards are not affected by this change ONLY PCMCIA 16 bit ISA cards.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Pcmcia\Parameters]
"SoundsEnabled"=dword:00000001
"IsaIrqRescanComplete"=dword:00000000
"DisableIsaToPciRouting"=dword:00000000

I did the following:
1. As you suggested
2. Double clicking UNPATCH.REG gave error in script
3. Started regedt32 and manually changed the values. I noticed that one entry was missing. So I added that (dword) with required value.
4. Restarted the computer
5. Inserted the card
6. It was detected !! and started working !!
7. I was able to use the connection and browsed for a while. I checked the properties of connection and disabled the connection.
8. Removed the card and re-inserted. Now it was not detected.
9. I checked the registry and changed the IsaIrqRescanComplete back to 0 (it was now 1)
10. Tried again and again. But the card did not get detected. I also tried restarting the laptop ( did 6 to 7 times) , tried both the slots. But the problem persists. One improvement is that after adding the 3rd entry in registry, now it never shows the blue screen. But card is still not detected. It happened only once

Then see if it gets detected.
As you can guess by now its an IRQ sharing or NOT sharing problem.
Microsoft in its arrogance makes it worse by disabling the
ability to use 16 Bit ISA PCMCIA cards.

Delete the card from the Device manager.
The Network card
When looking at devices in Device Manager (right-click My Computer on the desktop, choose Manage, then click Device Manager in the left-hand pane), only Plug-and-Play devices are shown by default. To view non-PnP devices, choose (click) "Show Hidden Devices" from the "View" menu. Device Manager must be highlighted in the left-hand pane in order for this menu item to appear in the View menu. You may be surprised how many device drivers were hidden from view before!
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=241257
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after each line
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd\%SystemRoot%\System32
start devmgmt.msc
where %SystemRoot% is the folder in which Windows 2000 is installed.
Troubleshoot the devices and drivers in Device Manager, as required.
NOTE: You must first select show hidden devices on the Device Manager View menu before you can see devices that are no longer present in the system.
When you are done troubleshooting, quit Device Manager, and then close the Command Prompt window. Closing the window clears the variable you set in step 2 and prevents ghosted devices from being displayed when you use the Show hidden devices command.
NOTE: When you quit Device Manager and close the Command Prompt window, the set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 variable is turned off so you cannot see the phantom devices.
An alternative approach, for developers or power users who need this feature enabled constantly, is to set this environment variable globally. To do so, perform the following steps:
Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the Advanced tab.
Click the Environment Variables tab.
Set the variables in the System Variables box.
NOTE: You should use this method only for troubleshooting or development purposes, to prevent users from accidentally uninstalling a required device that is not currently present (such as a USB device or docking station that is not currently connected to a laptop computer).
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
Microsoft Is smarter than you are.
Microsoft gets to decide what you can or cannot delete.

What about when you have windows 98 like I have on my Inspiron 3500. I tried to use the same directions you gave ayesh, but it does not work. I'm using Netgear wireless PC card, and the dell slot simply does not work.
Your help would be appreciated Speedstep

Close to the same problem. I have an Inspiron 3700 that will not use the PCMCIA slots since I did a reformat and re-install of Win98. The Network card - 3 com Megahertsz Lan - works fine in other computers. The control panel PCMCIA section says that the slot is empty. I've checked the BIOS and there is nothing there to turn off or on the PCMCIA.
It worked fine before I reformated this machine. I was trying to solve a problem of freezing and crashing. I keep getting a report when I boot that the memory size needs to be reduced. I don't know if it is related to this.
Confused. Help!
Thanks
Tim

My Inspiron 7000 having a similar problem. Have tried to run reconfiguation restore to a previous version without success. Am now reinstalling Win 98 while a 3COM mdl 3CCFE574BT is in the upper slot. Don't know if it will work but will advise. (Hardware profile in device manager doesn't recognize PCMCIA card. Err message about a possible device manager in the CONFIG.SYS file excluding upper memory regions between A000 and FFFF - What's with that?)

Bump.
Just wondering if anyone has had success with solving this problem in Win98.
TIA!

Linksys, Dell and Microsoft technical support could not stop my Inspiron 2100 from feezing when I inserted my Notebook adapter (Linksys wpc54G). So I bought a Microsoft wireless adapter and got the same problem, even though I hired a local computer troubleshooter to look at it. We finally solved the problem by using the Linksys wireless compact USB adapter instead of the PCMCIA slot.

The instructions listed are for Windows 2000. What about Win98SE? Any ideas?
