Possible to upgrade memory capacity on Inspiron 1720?
I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 that I just upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. The Dell website says the maximum memory that can be put in the laptop is 4GB (two 2GB DDR2 SDRAM 200-Pin modules).
Dell tech support says that is a motherboard restriction for the 1720.
Is there anyway to upgrade the hardware to take advantage of the fact that the 64-bit OS can utilize more than 4GB of memory?

I see we have the same issues. I thus far have 6GB in use. I received one reply that it should be able use 8GB. I also received the same info from a repair shop that did some work on my 1720. Let me know if you get ahead on your quest.

Hi retiredcowboy,
The Inspiron 1720 is shipped with 4GB Memory capability. The specifications of the system should handle 8GB Memory however; we have not tested the system with 8GB memory on it. Since you already are using 6GB Memory on the system, I would suggest you to go ahead and try using 8GB and check if it works.
Please let me know in case of any queries.
Thanks and regards

Ok, ran every possible combo of memory using both slots. My results where such: 2x2 3.99GB, 2x4 5.99 GB, 4x4 would not boot up.
All 2x4 combos where the same as was the 4x4 combos. Re-flashed BIOS no help. Suggestions. . .

Hi retiredcowboy,
I appreciate your effort in having the issue fixed. Through what you have done, you can use the system with 6GB memory. As i already mentioned earlier, we have tested the system only with 4GB memory.
Please let me know in case of any queries.
Thanks and regards

If you appreciate what customers are doing why not test the 1720 with 8GB and advise accordingly. Oh that's right Dell want's to sell me another computer not try to assist. :emotion-18:

Hi retiredcowboy,
This model is no more in production from Dell and hence testing new upgrades may not be possible. As per the document, I see that the system supports only 4GB Memory as the maximum capacity.
Please let me know in case of any queries.
Thanks and regards
