Power Button in Settings

Can I create a shortcut that will be the same as the "Power" button in Settings?  I have an XPS 15 running Windows 8

Thanks,

Jim V.

Hi Jim V,

The "Power" button in "Settings" is not an app and a shortcut cannot be created. You can configure the Power button on the laptop to Shutdown, Hibernate, Sleep or Do Nothing. Please follow the steps provided below to configure it:

1. Move the mouse pointer to the top right corner of the screen to open the “Charms” bar.
2. Click on “Search” in the Charms bar.
3. Click “Settings” and type “Power Options” in the search field and click on “Power Options” on the left to open it.
4. On the “Power Options” page, click “Choose what power button does” .
5. In the right pane, click on the drop down menu next to “When I press the power button” select the appropriate option.

Please reply to this message if you need further assistance.

I have already created a button the taskbar to shutdown the laptop, what I want is for the button to give me the same option as in the settings button on charms bar.  What you are telling me is that is not possible, if I understand you correctly.

To add a shutdown button to the taskbar, first create a shortcut on the desktop:

◦Right click on the desktop, choose ‘New’ -> Shortcut’

◦In the location field, type: "Shutdown.exe -s -t 00" without the parenthesis

◦Click on Next,  give a name to the shortcut (default name: Shutdown)

◦Once the shortcut is created, you can change the icon

◦Right click on the icon, click ‘Properties’

◦Click on ‘Change Icon’

◦Choose the icon, click ‘Ok’,

◦Click on ‘Apply

I then pinned it to the taskbar and then deleted the icon on the desktop

◦Then, right click on the icon and choose ‘Pin to taskbar’

To add a shutdown button to the taskbar, first create a shortcut on the desktop:

◦Right click on the desktop, choose ‘New’ -> Shortcut’

◦In the location field, type: "Shutdown.exe -s -t 00" without the parenthesis

◦Once the shortcut is created, you can change the icon

◦Right click on the icon, click ‘Properties’

◦Click on ‘Change Icon’

◦Choose the icon, click ‘Ok’,

◦Click on ‘Apply

◦Then, right click on the icon and choose ‘Pin to taskbar’

Hi jvanho01,

Thank you for providing the requested information. I would like you know that you need create separate buttons similar to Shutdown for “Restart” and “Logoff”. However, you would not be able to add all the options to the single button. To create the buttons for Restart and Logoff, you have to follow the same steps and replace the command “"Shutdown.exe -s -t 00" with “Shutdown -r -t 00” and “Shutdown.exe -L”.

You can also download a third party utility “HotShut” that sits silently your taskbar notification area offering you these 4 options to shutdown, restart, lock or logoff your computer. You can download the utility from the following link:

I hope the information provided is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
