I found another person with the very same problem on the web, and this is one of the suggestion :

"From the discription of the fault and logical process to narrow down the failure, this points to one fault. The connector that the AC adapter plugs into has a small switch that switches the AC adapter output to provide power to run the unit AND charge the battery (if it needs it) When this switch gets jammed, from forceful insertion or pushed against something while plugged in, this cam also force traces on the PCB off the board and breaking the connection. The unit works fine when plugged in and the battery showes 100% so it works fine. Battery connections wouldn't be suspect if the charge shows 100%. SOme units have a small auxillary board and others, the circuit is part of the MOBO. Good luck. Get a skilled tech to check out the problem."

Looks coherent with my case... does anyone has an opinion on this ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Deschain

I encountered the same problem - My M6500 refuses to start without a plugged in the AC.

The battery LED alternately blinking amber/yellow light with steady blue light - from the service manual: "Temporary battery failure with AC adapter present" - I have no idea what does it mean

Any news?

Thanks in advance, Alon

Hello Alon,

Sorry to hear about your laptop... From what I see, it doesn't seem to be exactly the same problem that I had : the LED on my laptop did not blink at all when I tried to power up the laptop without the AC. I ended up asking Dell to replace my motherboard, which corrected the problem.

I am no expert, but in your case, I would say that the problem is your battery, which seems to be dead : do you have the possibility to test another battery ?

Cheers, and good luck.

Oh sorry, I did not read your post carefully enough !

In this case indeed it looks very similar to my problem... From what I gathered around the net, there is some sort of switch on the motherboard that "tells" the laptop whether to get energy from the AC or from the battery. In your case and mine, it seems that this switch is stuck in "AC mode", regardless of the presence and state of the battery...

If you know a skilled technician, you may ask him if changing only the AC connector on the motherboard (which I think costs less than 100 euros) can do the trick ! However, if this "switch" is on the motherboard itself, I am afraid that you'll have to change it...

Cheers,

Deschain

Hello Deschain.

I am afraid, I was not clear - the LED is blinking just after I plug in the AC, actually the laptop is dead if it is not plugged in.

Yes, I did test another battery - as in your case, after I turn on the laptop (with the AC) - the battery shows 100% fully charged.

Thanks for your reply

Alon
