Primary codec is not ready??????

I have an Inspiron 7500 with ESS Maestro2 PCI sound card.  I was running W98 and had no problem recording movies from my video camera using MGI VideoWave software.  I updated to W2K, and now, even though I've updated all drivers repeatedly, I cannot record any sounds.

When I try to run VideoWave, I get the following message:  An error occurred while connecting to audio device. Error: Classfactory cannot supple requested class".  Then I'm told that my audio device is not installed.  I ran the Dell Diagnostics and the software reset test and register test for the sound device both fail.  I get the same error message for both, which says PRIMARY CODEC IS NOT READY.

What codec is it looking for????  And where do I find it????  I have no trouble playing CD's, DVD's, or any other sound, it's only when I try to record sound do I get error messages saying "audio device cannot be found."

Any help would be appreciated.

PS..I've already downloaded and installed and uninstalled and re-installed W2K drivers for the proper sound card from both Dell and ESS Tech support to no avail.
