Problem with E6500 Smartcard Reader / Cryptoflex e-gate 32k Smartcard / OpenSC
Hello,
smartcard reader of Dell E6500 has a problem with Cryptoflex e-gate 32k smartcards. OpenSC tool pcsc_scan detects card correctly, but pkcs15-tool is not able to access card. OpenSC is latest version, even svn version does not change that behaviour. Problem can be repruduced with Ubuntu Linux 8.10 and Debian Linux 4.x (stable). According to log files there is a problem between card reader and card. Problem does not occure with other smartcards like e.g. OpenPGP card. Problem occures on Windows XP, Ubuntu 8.10ß, Debian 4.0 (Etch) and Debian 5.0 (Lenny). For further details see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openct/+bug/281803 which shows some debugging output. I assume it is a problem by OpenSC or it is possible to be handeled by OpenSC, so I opened a bug report.
Workaround: Any external smartcard reader e.g. ReinerSCT cyberflex or USB interface of Cryptoflex solves problem.
Is it a problem of
Dell card reader firmware ?
OpenSC ?
Cryptoflex firmware ?
I cannot decide this. Any hints ?
best regards
Christian

I have the same problem. The Latitude E6500 was ordered with Vista, which was wiped and then XP Professional was loaded. We use ActiveClient as the middleware and it also detects that a smart card is inserted, but will not access the smart card to read the certificates.
Also tried the workaround of an external Smart Card Reader before I saw the 1st Post and this works.
Before installing the drivers for the Smart Card the Device Manager shows Broadcom USH with a question mark for unknown device. Installed the XP driver for the ControlPoint Security Manager (R194881) which DELL says that must be installed first to install drivers for security devices and before installing the ControlPoint Security Manager (R195013). Device Manager changes and NO unknown devices are listed.
Also, I tried installing the ControlPoint Security Manager (R195013) application, but I receive the same result with the program installed or uninstalled, the middleware detects that a smart card is inserted but will not access the smart card.
I'm at a loss and have 20 more to image.
