 Petar,

"I can not find that Sigmatel audio driver for vostro 1510 with vista nor the IntelliSonic Speech Enhancement tool that somebody had told."

Go to the Vostro 1510 Vista drivers page to get the Realtek audio driver. Your computer model has Realtek, not Sigmatel like the others have. You don't have the IntelliSonic either, but that does not enable your mic to work anyway; it is simply an enhancement tool.

I don't know how to enable the mic in  your model. Have you thoroughly searched the Sound properties to try to find a configuration? Maybe someone else will provide the answer.

How have you tried to test the mic to see if it works? Usually it is better to use a recording program to test rather than a voip program.

Here are some other threads where folks are having mic problems, but on different models.

Yeah, I am using the windows vista sound recorder and no sound is recorded. Those problems didnt help me at all because there is basically no adequate answer and solution to other's problems.

Thank you, if you can help with something else I would be glad to hear it. Ps - I have preinstalled the realtek sound card drivers several times but nothing happens too... I will be expecting your help,

Petar, I wish I could help, but I don't have a computer with a mic, much less with a Realtek audio system. However I have saved in my notes several tips from others about turning on the mic -- but on Sigmatel systems.

To Turn on Mic Array

Here are some instructions posted by our former moderator and other forum members:

"Open the Dell Webcam Center, and look for Audio Source in the bottom right corner.  Click on Microphone/Line In and then go to More, and select Microphone Array (SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC).  Once the Audio Source says Microphone Array (SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC) then the microphone should be active." --- originally posted by Rollie, an Audio Board moderator

This tip is from another forum member:

"I'm using Windows XP on the same computer, but had the same problem. What I found was that you need to turn on and adjust the "digital microphone" properties. If you right-click on the volume control in the system tray and select open volume control, then options > properties > select recording radio button and make sure the digital mic is ticked. Click Ok and make sure the select box is ticked for digital mic once again. Increase the volume level as appropriate. Use the sound recorder in accessories to test the two mics located to the left and right of the built-in camera." --- cssguy

"Open control panel and double click sound>click the recording tab at top>Microphone should be shown in next window and should have a green check on it.Double click on the micrphone and click the device usage tab at bottom,if it is disabled select enable and click apply." dgkpcon

I checked my wife's 1720 with SP1 and it was working. I went in under Webcam Center, then selected TOOLS and then audio settings (I think it was).  the microphone selections were bluetooth or Microphone array....do you see a microphone array option.  If so, select that that is what ours is set at.  If not, then I don't know what else to say. --eskymi

how to access from vista (from Teamspeak forum).

For mic control:
Start>Control Panel>Sounds>Recording>Right click>show disabled devices>double click or right click properties on the microphone>Level controls the volume that other people can hear you>Custom is for mic boost, used if level control can not get your voice high enough for others to hear you.

JIm , actually at this point there is no indication that the mic itself is plugged in, I mean in sound in control panel and in other areas there is no option for the internal mic ? why is that ? Should and how I make a backup to a previous saved settings ? Or another suggestion.

Thank you

Was the internal mic standard on that model or was it an option? If the latter there might not be a mic.

One way to find out if a particular model has a mic is to run the mic test in the audio section of Dell Diagnostics. To run Diagnostics restart the computer and as soon as it starts to boot up hold down f12. Select 'Diagnostic' from the boot menu. The computer will run its pre-boot self assessment tests (PSA) for 3 or 4 minutes before the Dell Diagnostic starts. These pre-boot tests play some beeps and tones through the system speaker but this doesn't test the rest of the audio hardware, so you still need to let Dell Diagnostics run after the pre-boot tests finish. Dell Diagnostics plays an instrumental piece of music complete with drums, so if you only hear some tones then you have only run the pre-boot assessment test.

When Dell Diagnostics does open, select 'custom', then the audio test. Diagnostics will play some audio and ask you whether you heard it, etc. Eventually the mic test should come up. If your model doesn't have an internal mic the test will notify you of that fact and offer to test your external mic instead.

At least that's how it used to work. I'm not sure if it still works that way with this newest generation of Dell's with mics.

As for returning to previous settings, there are 2 options.

> System Restore. In Vista, type 'restore' into the Start menu search box, and System Restore will appear in the start menu. Pick a date before the problem began.

> Factory Image Restore. Whatever was working when you got the computer will work after Factory Image Restore, except for any hardware problems. The problem is that you will have to back up all of your data to external media, and afterwards transfer it back and reinstall any programs that you have added since you got the computer. And if the mic wasn't working when Dell shipped the computer (or if it has gone bad) it still won't work after FIR. In that case you would have Dell repair it.
