Problems Uninstalling Programs

Hi,

I have a Dell Studio Laptop running Windows vista, and when I go to unintall a program through control panel, it tells me that policies have been set to not allow me to uninstall any programs and to contact my policy administrator.  I am signed into the computer as the administrator and have not changed any policies, that I am aware of.  If anyone could help me out as to what I am ment to look at the get this changed so that I can uninstall programs, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

HI Mindy

Policy restrictions can be put on an administrator account as well. Are you having problem with one application removal or with any of them ?

Try going to the programs menu and inside the specified application folder there would an uninstaller. Most of the applications have an uninstaller present.

Let me know if that works out

Hi Telson,

Thanks for your response.

I tried uninstalling the programs from the applications but it still comes up saying that i do not have permission and to contact my administrator or sign in as the administrator, when I already am.

I am trying to uninstall a couple of programs and they both come up with the error.

Do you know how/where I can change these policies that they are talking about so that I can allow myself to uninstall programs?

Thanks once again.

Yes Mindy we can remove the Software Policies.

Follow these steps and it should take care of the problem.

1) Go to start menu and in the search box type 'Group Policy', then click on Edit Group Policy

2) You will see a window similar to the one below

3) Under Computer configuration Grill all the way to Windows Settings> Security Settings> Software Restriction Policies

As shown below

4) Right Click Software restriction policies and select 'Delete Software Restriction Policies' as shown below

5) We are done !! you should be able to remove programs now, you screen will look like this.

You should be all set, anything different from the above screens do let me know. If it has fixed the problem go ahead and close the post :)

Cheers

Thanks for that Telson.  I am having another problem though, as I can not seem to get into the screen after clicking on 'Edit Group Policy'.  It comes up with an error saying 'MMC Cannot open the file C:\Windows\system32\gpedit.msc. This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was create by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file'.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Which is the OS you use ?

The Group Policy editor is only available in Windows Vista Small Business Edition, Professional Edition, Enterprise Edition and Ultimate edition.

Go through the Microsoft article regarding Group Policies, u have a patch where you can install it as well.

Try installing for your OS and let me know what happens.

There are two reasons as to why the software restriction policy was set

1) Third partty tools, mainly a virus.

2) Someone else at home who manages the system or help setup.

Is anyone else using this system apart from yourself ?.

Mindy, are the programs that you are trying to uninstall legitimate programs, or are they programs that you are unfamiliar with? This does not sound like a hardware problem. There are several options to try, but it might be good to see what is preventing you from making changes. You may want to try posting some diagnostic logs on the Malware Removal Forum.
