Question about upgrade Vostro 5460

Hi Dell Support,

Thank you!

I purchased Vostro 5460, and I am thinking to upgrade the system because it is not able to support some of my work that required a lot of resources:

My questions are:

1. Can I upgrade current 4GB DDR3 RAM to 8GB or 16GB (1600MHz)?

The spec suggested it is supported 4GB is there any technical reason DELL is using 4GB for this system will there be any overheating or any issue that we need to aware before we decided to upgrade? PS: I googled and found few users successfully install 8GB RAM, what DELL think about this?

2.a. My current OS is Wins 8, I think it is quite hard to learn Wins 8 and thinking to switch to ubuntu.

If I install Ubuntu at my main C:\ will I able to recover back, I think DELL created recovery partition somewhere in the system, If I need to restore back Win 8, how to recover it back?

2.b. If the HDD damage and I change the HDD how to recover back the system without recovery DVD?

3. If I am choosing using Win 8 and decided to install msata SSD, and I want to make the msata SSD as main tier 1 storage while the 500GB HDD disk as data disk, how to install the base OS + few application running on mstat?

Thank you.

Hi  Global,

Dell ships this system model with maximum of 6 GB DDR3 with 1600 MHz memory.

You may install Ubuntu if you wish to. However Dell will not support this software as Dell did not ship this system with Ubuntu.

Only way to restore the system back to Windows 8 is by recovery media or by manual reinstallation. Please find the link for instruction to create recovery media:

 http://dell.to/17pbMq4

If the HDD is damaged, and if the system is within warranty, Dell will replace the HDD with the factory image. In case the system is out of warranty, software has to be installed using the recovery media.

The system is shipped with 32 GB mSATA drive. You may install the Operating system on the mSATA drive. However 32GB mSATA drive will not be sufficient to install other applications along with Operating system.

Hi Global User.

As I already mentioned in my earlier post that Dell has tested only 6 GB memory on this system model. However it is technically possible to upgrade up to 8GB.

You may have to create a recovery discs to reinstall the operating system once again.  While installing another Operating system, there are more chances for the recovery partition to get corrupted even though you have not deleted the partition.

You will need the operating system installation media. You may follow the steps below to install the Operating system on the mSATA drive.  :

  • Power on the computer and press F2 button on the Dell logo
  • Using right arrow key, highlight Advanced option
  • Using down arrow key, Highlight Intel(R) Rapid Start Technology and press Enter
  • Press Enter on iRST Support and Disable it
  • Press ESC button to go back to previous menu
  • Highlight the Boot option and take the boot drive(For example CD/DVD) to first priority using the +/- keys on keyboard
  • Press Enter on Hard Drive and make the mSATA drive first boot priority
  • Press F10 to save changes and exit
  • Press F12 on Dell logo and Insert the Operating system media into the optical drive
  • Highlight the CD/DVD drive and press Enter to boot from the installation media
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to install the operating system
  • Ensure that you install the operating system on the mSATA drive at the drive selection screen
