Buy a single 1 gig stick instead, it will give you ability to upgrade later.
we have the same motherboard as the precision 50 and I have more than 1 GB works great.

Hi, New here so be kind (ha,ha)

Have a Dell Dimension 8200 and want to increase RAM.  Opened unit to see 4 slots with 2 used. These 2 RAM slots are populated with Samsung 128MB cards (MR16RO828BN1-CK8)

Have been reading about different RAM and conclude these to be RDRAM, but I'm no computer expert and wonder how to attack this upgrade.  What do I buy? 2 more 128s? Replace these with bigger cards(256) to get to 512?

Help.......Been to crucial.com and they have no listed upgrade for the 8200......now what

Frustrated,

Notice you have same system I have. I saw a kingston 1gb stick for sale for $100. I thought the max in a 8200 slot was 512MB.
What type of mem chip did you use for your 8200?
Do you have to flash the bios to an M50 bios?
Or just install  the chip?

First this is a notebook forum not a desktop forum. Your desktop take RDRAM, RAM BUS. The only place to get that is from Dell and it is EXPENSIVE beyound belief. Sell that boat anchor and buy a new system. Dell is the only maker that used RAM BUS RAM think it was the wave of the future. It was NOT and now the owner of models like yours are paying the price.

I got mine from crucial, search for the M50 1GB chip you can buy 2 of them, I think I paid about 150 a piece?
just plug and play. I am interested in upgrading to the M50 BIOS, for the cdockII, but the ram works fine on this BIOS.

Frosty,

Are you using WINXP SP2 or  the orig XP? Have you applied the Q330909_WXP_SP2_x86_ENUQ330909_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exe fix file from Microsoft?

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&familyid=4cbc68d2-09e1-4511-af14-03f357180135

I think SP2 alone may fix the prob. everyone else who installed over 1 GB on their Dell Inspiron seems not to be able to hibernate.  Have you really tried to used this feature with 1.5 in stalled.  How big is your PAge and HIberfil.sys files .  Page file I believe needs to be 1.5 x 3 ore 4.5GB aND THE hiber file needs to be 1.5 .  That's 6gb ! just for mem use!  What is yours set at? thanks

Newegg is selling the Kingston 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) Notebook Memory for $100 shipped.

Will this work in the Inspiron 8200?  What's the difference between DDR and DDR2 memory?  More important, can I install it in my 8200?

Thanks in advance to anyone who gives me a fast answer (the sell ends 24 hours from now).
