Recharge Battery Without Laptop

Question

Hi,   Is it possible to recharge a laptop battery without having access to a suitable laptop?   Have a situation where the Inspiron 1420 notebook that I bought in January for my daughter, who is currently travelling through the UK, was water-damaged (covered by insurance). I've just lodged an order for another new one, which will mean she'll be back up-and-running properly in a couple of weeks, but in the mean time I'm trying to find a way for her (my daughter, that is) to 'limp along' with what she's currently got. The laptop runs perfectly when running entirely from the battery, but when she plugs in mains power it automatically shuts down usually within about 10-15 minutes. The battery receives 'some' charge when the mains power is plugged into the laptop (when laptop is turned off), but she tells me that she can see the mains power light on the laptop flicking on-and-off from time to time, and so it's not receiving a proper charge. Consequently it is getting virtually impossible to charge up the battery fully.   Any ideas of how she could get the battery charged up without the laptop would be very helpful.   Thanks.

I have a similar problem I guess my power jack in the back of my Inspiron 1100 is broken and now my AC adapter wont power it up. Is there any way to charge my battery alone I notice there is a spot on the battery to plug in for a charger but I dont have a battery charger only AC adapter. Would it be possible to use a friends charger to charge my battery when she has the same laptop and battery?) I know I sound kinda clueless..sorry)
