Repeated RAM Memory Failure

Greetings,

This is my 1st post so be nice :emotion-5:

My Inspiron 7720 SE 17" has had repeated problems where squiggly lines appear on the screen, then the mouse won't work, so it is shut down.  Then 4 slow beeps start and the puter wont  boot.  So I chat wiyh Dell Support and find out it is memory failure, so he has me remove the 2 4GB chips, install one my and the puter boots up, then the other and it boots up ok, then insert both and it boots up ok.  There goes 2 hours of my night....:emotion-20:

However, it continues to have the issue and rather than calling or chatting with them for an hour or whatever I just pop the back cover, remove and reinstall the chips and it works ok until the next time.  I use the lap top now at night in my  recliner  and then sit in on the couch so it gets moved around a little but the  problems isn't necessarily due to bumps and movement, yet it seems a few times it might be at least partly related to the laptop getting moved around.

I have not yet transitioned myDell to replace my 4 1/2 year old HP DV9 desktop replacement business laptop  which has performed flawlessly which is not normal for HPs I guess :emotion-11:   I want to make the transition soon for my new Dell which I LOVE but the RAM issue is a concern as I can't have the failure while I am working.

So I wonder if I should request  from tech support new  RAM chips or might it be the module the RAM sits in and request an onsite visit?

Also, my backlit keyboard is not working and don't know where the settings are for it so not sure if it is the keyboard or hopefully just a setting

Any help or comments is much appreciated and thanks in advance! :emotion-21:\

Hi  DooDahMon,

Welcome to the Community,

It could be a loose connection issue or issue with the memory module(chips) connector slot which is part of the motherboard.Since the system is booting after the memory module(chips) are reseated it should not be an issue with the RAM(memory module) chips.

If reseating the memory modules has not fixed the issue completely I think your system needs to be serviced and motherboard(which has the RAM connector slot) needs to be replaced.

For the back light keyboard check if its turned on in Windows Mobility Center(Click on start,Control Panel). If it shows its turned ON and still if it does not work,go to file path c:\program file\dell\quickset and double click on Launch BacklitKB.exe.Let me know what you get when you double click on it.

To check if I can help you set up the service call, please private message me your system service tag number. To private message click on my user name and click start conversation.

Thank You
