SD card reader problem on Inspiron 9300 running Windows 2000

Question

Hi,

I have installed my new inspiron 9300 with Windows 2000 Professional. It was a rather long and tedious process and I believe I have finally got everything working...

Except for the SD card reader (which appears in device manager as a PCI device which is lacking drivers)

I don't seem to be able to find a driver for it. I understand for XP users, SD card reader driver comes with SP2. However, there doesn't seem to be anything for Windows 2000 users. Windows Update has yield nothing.

I have already applied Windows 2000 SP4 as well as ALL the critical updates from Windows Update. I would try looking for a driver elsewhere, but I am unable to get a more specific model number.

Could anyone help me out here please?

why on earth would u downgrade to win2000. 2000 had tons of issues with reliablity and conflicts with software.  go back to xp. why mess with something that was probably working. and it was a new system. hopefully system restore will work if not then use cd and go to xp.

I am not going to debate about Windows 2000 vs XP. I think it is sufficient to say that in MY experience, I have found Windows 2000 to be far more stable and does exactly what I want it to do without all these annoying wizards and other "user-friendly" tools which annoy me to no end.

As biased as my personal experience may be, Windows 2000 has served me well. Windows XP has not. It may not be the case for most Windows users, but it is the case for me, and since I am installing the computer for my personal use, I think my preference and bias are all that counts. :)

Anyway, thanks to bacillus for the link. The driver worked, although I still needed to download SD storage card driver from Windows Update. But that was no hassle once the reader was recognised by Windows OS.

Now Windows 2000 lives here.

Not funny. The driver you posted does not work for XP SP2. 'This computer does not support this operating system' error.   Yeah. Right.

Don't know what you are talking about. The title of the thread clearly states Windows 2000. If the driver doesn't work under XP, why should anyone be surprised?

That driver posted by bacillus at least gets the SD card reader recognised by Windows 2000... then another Windows Update got it working perfectly. It worked for me.

Yes, SP2 is supposed to have built-in support.

But once again, bacillus only posted the link to the driver to help me out. And I run Windows 2000.

So the point is, whether the driver works at all for Windows XP or not, is rather irrelevant to me or the topic of discussion.

Sorry you don't know what I am talking about.   Bacillus driver works for 2000 and XP SP1, but not SP2.   Doesn't SP2 have built-in support for the reader?

Has anyone found an answer to this problem?  Mine still does not work with XP Sp2.  Dell tech support is now telling me that if I bought the card from them they would support it, but since I bought a card from somewhere else they will not.  WHAT?   Kingsington cards are NOT MADE BY DELL!!!!  What difference does it make where I bought the thing?  I had it before I ordered the laptop.  The laptop does not work - XP SP2 was installed by Dell and the SD card has not worked since I got the machine.  And now they want me to call in and PAY FOR SUPPORT to get the card to work???   I was told by one support person to install the Ricoh CardBus Controller driver.  But that driver does not appear to be on the site anywhere... Can anyone find it?

I have the same problem on a 9300 with XP SP2. My card is a Lexar Platinum 40x Speed SD. Same thing from Dell: 'some cards just don't work' But it works fine via USB. ARGH!
