SPDIF Output

Hi,

I've got a SPDIF digital audio output on my notebook (Inspiron 8100).

I've had a look around this forum and the web and am still a little confused about how I can use this.

1) Do I connect this to a coax digital input on a home theatre receiver for decoding?

2) Does the SPDIF output take its source from the internal sound chip or straight from the DVD player?

3) If it takes the sound from the internal chip, can I output anything on it e.g high quality playback of MP3 files on a home receiver (2 channel) or does it need to be a surround format (e.g. 5.1).

Any insights on this would be helpful.

Thanks.

Ben.

bdaileyau,

S-Video / S/PDIF PortThe Latitude C810 / Inspiron 8100 includes a hybrid type of S-Video port. In addition to the standard S-Video support that enables users to view DVD movies or presentations by connection to most high-end monitors, televisions, projectors and VCR's, the unique S-Video port dongle provides a digital audio out S/PDIF port. This feature allows digital audio to be play through a set of external digital surround sound speakers. This is added by a change to the pins on the S-Video port allowing the additional functionality. For more information on the S/PDIF standard, visit:
http://www.epanorama.net/documents/audio/spdif.html.

Note:
The S-Video / S/PDIF dongle does NOT come with the machine. This dongle must be purchased separately.

http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.main&ID=ce4f3b6d13494004f69f07cb11070055

Beutiful. Perfect. Sound. Dolby AC3 AND DTS !!!! unbelievable.. You can probably find one in ebay for much less than 99.. I got mine on ebay for ~55 + shipping. My Inspiron 8200 is something to be heard with this little treasure!

good luck!

Thanks Despero,

Funny you should mention that - I got a xitel (www.xitel.com) device which looks pretty similar.

Works a treat also although the output level is a bit low for my liking,

Cheers.
