SSD card insertion not recognised

I have a Latitude E5530 running Windows 8 64-bit.

When I insert an SSD card into the built-in slot, nothing happens. However the card is fine on other systems and if I reboot the laptop with the card in place, it shows up in Windows Explorer and works perfectly. The card is a SanDisk 8GB SDHC card (I've only tried that one)

Has anyone else seen this, is it normal behaviour?

I have checked the Dell site and it didn't suggest any updated drivers. I have Windows update set to receive automatic updates.

Thanks in advance.

Peter

It seems that you have an issue with the SanDisk SDHC not working in Windows 8.

Let us start with a few questions-

1)      How exactly is the card reader connected to the computer?

2)      What happens when you try to read the memory cards?

3)      Do you get any error message or error code?

4)      Is the device being detected on the computer?

I would like more information regarding the issue.

Method 1-

I would have you run the hardware and devices troubleshooter.

Refer the steps-

a)        Click on “Start” and type “troubleshooting” (without the quotations) and then select “Settings”.

b)       Now, Click on “view all”.

c)       Run the “hardware and devices” troubleshooter.

Method 2-

I would have you refer the article-

What if a device isn't installed properly?

windows.microsoft.com/.../what-device-isnt-installed-properly

Additionally, I would have you look for the latest drivers for the card reader.

Chipset drivers are required.

Hi Peter Hull,

It might be an issue with the drivers. You may try to update the drivers from the link : http://dell.to/YxyNFt

If the issue persists, you can try installing the same driver in compatibility mode, that may work.

  • Download the drivers for your computer from the above link.
  • Right Click the driver installation file and select Properties -- > Compatibility Tab.
  • Select Windows 7 from the list in the following image.

  • Click Apply -- > OK.
  • Right Click the file and select the 'Run As Administrator' option to install.

Hope this helps. Do reply with the findings.

Hi Sundeep,

I tried the steps as you suggested. Unfortunately the result was the same; the card does not appear in explorer.

Hi Peter,

You may uninstall the USB root hubs and check if it makes any difference. To uninstall USB Root Hubs:

  • Click on 'Start'
  • Right Click on 'Computer' and click on 'Manage'
  • Click on 'Yes' if the UAC asks for permission
  • Click on 'Device Manager'
  • Expand ‘Universal Serial Bus controllers’
  • From the list, look for ‘USB Root Hub’
  • Right click, choose ‘Uninstall’, choose ‘OK’
  • Uninstall all ‘USB Root Hub’ listed
  • Wait for all the drivers to get uninstalled
  • Restarted the computer
  • Restarting the computer will install ‘USB Root Hub’s automatically on the computer

You may also try creating a new user account and check if the issue persists in it.

If the issue persists, you may try restoring your computer to an earlier date when the card was working as desired. For performing system restore you may refer to the link : http://dell.to/VRG2ad

Hope this helps. Do reply with the findings.

Thanks for your help. In answer to your questions

1)      How exactly is the card reader connected to the computer?

It's part of the laptop.

2)      What happens when you try to read the memory cards?

When I insert the card, nothing happens - so there is nothing to click on to see the files on the card.

3)      Do you get any error message or error code?

None

4)      Is the device being detected on the computer?

Device manager shows "SDA compliant SD Host Controller". I assume it is that. Windows tells me it's working properly and if I try to update drivers it tells me I have the latest ones.

Hardware and devices troubleshooter did not find any issues.

Just to repeat, if I reboot with the card in place, it does work fine.

It seems to have started working now, after I followed SpeedStep's suggestion to run the troubleshooter. I am not sure why, since it did not appear to have done anything. It may be coincidence. Anyway I will update if it stops working again. Thanks for all who replied.

Me again. It seems to have stopped working now. I've tried all the troubleshooters again and checked for updated drivers.

What I've found is: if I go into Device Manager, and disable the 'SDA Standard Compliant SD Device Host Controller' then re-enable it, the SD card insertion works. By that I mean, when I insert the card, the laptop plays a little sound and a Windows Explorer window appears.

After a shutdown it goes back to not working. I insert a card and nothing happens.

I don't use SD cards often so I've been using my work-around for a while now but it's starting to get a bit annoying. Is it only me that has this problem?

Thanks,

Pete

ps. The driver is version 6.2.9200.16384 win8_rtm.120725-1247

If you try re-enabling it (as I describe above), does that work?

One other thing I've noticed - in Device Manager, under System Devices there are a load of entries labelled 'Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family PCI Express Root.' One of these is disabled (has a little down-arrow badge on the icon) and if I re-enable it, the SD card works OK. But unfortunately (and I'm not sure under what circumstances) it gets disabled again.

Having the same problem on my Dell E6430 laptop, SD card not working, not in windows 7 or 8 or 8.1

I already gave up hope and started using an external card reader.
