SSD in Vostro 1700?

I use a Vostro 1700 with 2 HDD's.

To increase the speed op de laptop I consider replacing the 'c' drive with a Samsung 512Gb SSD (type 830). I know I'll probably have to rebuild the OS.

Is this possible?

Does it work with the Windows Vista OS?

Can I use the Reinstallation DvD's?

Are there any problems to be expected?

Do I need additional Dell drivers/software?

Any suggestions?

I found this thread, because I'm currently, unsuccessfully, trying to replace the drive (HDD) in my Vostro 1700 with a SSD.

I can't add it as a second drive, because I don't have an extra drive caddy.  I've ordered a few drive caddies w/connectors & screws, on ebay.

So...,

The first thing I wanted to do, after getting my new SSD home from the store, was to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview.  The install failed, and I couldn't find the Windows Vista disk that originally shipped with my Vostro, so I tried loading Windows XP Home, Windows XP Pro, and Slackware Linux.  All failed.

BIOS, win 8 beta (consumer preview), and slackware linux, all see that the drive is there.  Win XP Home thinks that there's no hard drive in the computer, and win xp pro comes up with a blue screen with a stop message with some hex addresses (I have the message written in a spiral notebook at home).

Oh, and speaking of BIOS, I dug through the BIOS settings, trying to find something I could tweak.  The only things I could think of were changing SATA settings from "AHCI" (factory default), to "SATA", and one other setting that I forget.  Bios version is A02.

I thought I got a bad drive, so I took it back to the store and got a new one.  It does all the same exact stuff.

After carefull consideration and investigating the sources on the internet I decided to go with it.

I replaced Drive 1 of my Vostro 1700 with a Samsung 830 256GB SSD. Because I have a laptap equiped with 2 HDD I didn't have trouble with caddies etc.

I replaced Vista with the retail version of Win7 Professional. This is the only valid option because Windows 7 does the trimming for the SSD (don't know whether Win8 already can do this for you. It's still beta as you know)

In general the laptop performance has doubled when running solely on the SSD. The remaining HDD is used for backup and storage of data. Yes, I know, the SSD can perform much better, but the internals of the laptop (SATA and mainboard) prevent this.

This configuration is running for over a month now in a business environment and I haven't had any problems so far. However it proves to be challenging to get the correct drivers for Windows 7....
