Scheduled update cycle? What is it?
I go to Drivers and Downloads, enter my service tag, get a list of available updates.
I pick an update, click on 'Level of importance:recommended'
I read: "Dell recommends applying this update during your next scheduled update cycle"
What is my 'scheduled update cycle' ?

Typically when installing drivers I will look to see what the driver is supposed to fix. If I have the problem that the driver is supposed to correct then certainly I will download it. If your system is running fine and the reported fix doesnt apply I may choose not to install the driver. Typically if the system isn't broken, there is no reason to fix it.
If you are having a problem with the system please reply back with what is happening. if there is a specific driver that you have questions about I will be happy to answer.

To Terry B,
thanks for your response. I have a Dell Studio 1557 with Dell touchpad driver 13.2.2.2. Gestures/ one finger zoom doesn't work. In fact, if I tick the box to enable it, that gesture (vertical stroke along left edge) actually scrolls (just like a vertical stroke on the right edge), also, circular scroll now works here on the left edge, but clockwise gesture scrolls up (whereas on the right edge clockwise scrolls down). Not a big deal, but thought a driver update might fix this. Downloaded Synaptics driver 14.0.2.0 from Dell, installed (removed original driver first), restarted as requested, blue screen, recovery mode restored system to point before update. Is this a BIOS issue? Do I need to update BIOS first? (BIOS update is not on list of updates available when I put in my service tag). Still wondering, what is 'scheduled update cycle' ?

It doesn't sound like a BIOS issue. Have you used an external mouse at all and if so did you install any drivers for it?
If so I suggest uninstalling any mouse drivers and the touchpad driver. Then reinstalling the touchpad driver again and see if it makes a difference.

Sounds good. Please let me know what you find out about the mouse drivers and if they may be conflicting with each other.

I do have an external mouse (Logitech- from Dell with the original order). Will test your suggestion later; at the moment I'm too busy (and scared) to be dealing with another blue screen so might just leave it be. Still confused about 'scheduled update cycle'; what am I missing here?
