I bought brand new XPS 15 1 month back and i have been experiencing same problem
my Specs are Core i7 Nvidia GeForece GT 540M ( Optimus ) with Intel HD onboard Graphic, 8 GB RAM.
But i have disable the power conservation features which is shown in the below attached pic, and after that i didnt experience that problem. U should also try that and give me feed back about it.
Assuming you have the same graphics card as mentioned in this thread, i.e Nvidia GeForece GT 540M and your system runs on Windows 7 64 bit.I would suggest you to completely uninstall the nvidia driver by going to device manager, display adapter, right click on video card listed,Click uninstall,If it gives a option to put a check mark in the box which says Delete the driver software for this device, check the box and Click OK.
Reboot your system and download and install the latest driver from the link below:( its from NVIDIA website)
Hi Roshan, my video card is the Nvidia GeForce GT 525M, I've tried the uninstall and reinstall but just with Dell's published drivers, will try using the drivers from nvidia web site and will let you know the outcome.
I'm the initiator of the thread. I and my friends bought same laptop and every system has the same issue. I tried changed the motherboard, even got replacement from Dell for new laptop, tried every possible version of Nvidia Driver and all fix one can possibly imagine, the bad news it it is some issue with the Graphic Card only, I suppose, learn to cope with it :)
What is strange is that when you enter in safe mode, the issue is not present, at least not on the tests I did, that makes me think it's a driver issue or perhaps a conflict between the intel chipset drivers and the nvidia drivers, I dont know.
Thanks for the feedback.
BTW, have you contacted Dell support? what have they told you?
They are clueless, and that discoloration is only seen when on battery and when there is suppose to be a graphic change or use of optimus technology, i.e. when system moves from intel media accelerator to Nvidia or vice versa. The problem is many people don't notice such issue, they won't able to even see it and so not many reported it, but definitely this is an issue. And when the graphic change occurs the discoloration occurs and in next 10-20 seconds it settles again ! May be compatibility issue b/w Intel and Nvidia !
At least it's not a critical issue, as you mention one can live with it. I've just updated to the latest drivers by using device manager and uninstalling nvidia and deleted the software, BUT before rebooting I noticed windows 7 catches a VGA adapter and downloaded drivers from internet, I waited for this process to finish and the reboot and installed the latest nvidia drivers, I will let you know any news
I have the same problem, discolouration. It feels like the desktop icons fade with the background. Somehow reminds me of the quality of the CRT screens I had 10 years ago. I have the latest drivers from Nvidia, now I am downloading graphics drivers from Intel for the integrated graphics card. I couldn't get hold of dell's support today but I will try tomorrow.
Hopefully there would be a fix to this because it seems to be a shame for Dell to ship their laptops in this poor condition.
As an update, after installing the latest nvidia drivers and using windows update to update the VGA adapater drivers, the issue is still present. I contacted Dell by phone and explained in detail my issue, that in safe mode the issue is not present. What they suggested was to reinstall Windows, and if the issue is still there then they will replace the graphic card, I can bet you that If I reinstall windows, the issue will still be there, for me it's a bogus drivers and/or the interaction between nvidia and intel cards.
Since in safe mode display is fine and you've already updated the latest driver for the graphics card but still the issue persists in normal mode.
So reinstalling windows would definitely help in confirming if it the hardware (graphics card) or just the windows which is causing the problem.
Even after reinstalling windows if the issue persists, private message me your system service tag number. To private message accept my friend request, click on my user name and click on start conversation.

Contact Dell Support directly for warranty service on a new computer. This is a user forum, not support.

It may simply be that the backlight dims too much on battery power. You can control that in BIOS setup (F2 at powerup).

I was trying to know if someone is facing this issue i.e. is this wide spread issue or not which I suppose makes it valid to post on user forum !

Well I have the exact same issue and indeed is anoying.
I've updated the BIOS and the nvidia drivers and the issue is still there.
But in windows 7 safe mode, the issue is not present, so this makes me thing it's driver related.
Does anyone else with this issue? or a possible solution?
