Service/Asset Tag missing in BIOS

Hi,

I have a Latitude C400 that has just come back from our repairers where it had the motherboard replaced.  The problem I have is that I would like to re-enter the primary password on the machine before I send it back to my user, but when I attempt to do this the BIOS tells me that I cannot set a password because the system has no service tag.  If I go to the first page of the BIOS, the system information does indeed display the Service and Asset Tags as 'Not Installed'.

I have contacted the repairers about this and they've said that they would get back to me, but I'm hoping that I'll get a reply to this post before then as time is an issue.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks, Lee.

Since there is NO service tag installed you can set one with ASSET.COM. Search the Dell support site for this file and the instructions on how to use it. Be carefull becasue you only get one shot at setting the service tag. If you put the wrong one in you will need a Dell tech with a special program to erase the service tag and set a new one. ASSET.COM only works if there IS NO service tag installed.

Thanks Ed,

It looks like the ASSET.COM is part of the System Utilities download so I'll give it a try.

Much appreciated, Lee.
