Service Tag Error

When I enter the Service Tag, the Dell Support site displays the following error:
"We were unable to verify the Service Tag or Express Service Code you have entered. Please verify your entry or choose one of the options to the right. If you recently purchased a system, please try again in 48 hours."

System model?  Brand new?  Purchased from Dell or at retail, or from a third party?  New or used?

Express service code only accepts the first 11 characters even tho it is 12 characters. Had same problem and tech support agent told me to type in 11 characters and it worked!
