Service Tag missing in BIOS and Bottom cover

Hello - I recently purchase a used D620 from a college student that graduated and it is missing the Service Tag information in BIOS and the bottom of the machine.  The person that I bought it from and he said it was missing when he bought it last year.  My question is - If i do a restore defaults in BIOS - will that restore the original Service tag information in BIOS also?  thanks

No.  If it's gone, it's gone unless the original registered owner can look up the original information on their invoice, or by contacting Dell directly.

If the student you bought if from doesn't have the original order number the system was purchased on, you'll probably have to call Dell Sales as most times tech support can't find information based on phone numbers or names.

Hello - thanks for the information.  I have been working on gettig the service tag/express service code information.  I think I have finally tracked it down.  I have 2 questions at this point.

Q1)  How do I entere the service tag & express code into BIOS?

Q2)  Will it cause problems with my laptop if for some reason the student did not give me the correct tag info?

I am not concerned about trying to get any warrenty as I am sure there isn't any at this point.  I do want to use the BIOS password and the Biometric FP reader and neither will work without a service tag entered into the BIOS.

Thanks for any information.

Click on support and then click on system configuration on the left side of the screen. Enter the service tag you have and see if it is a valid one. Once you enter in the service tag all the information that was on the original order will pull up. You can see it coinsides with what you have, if not, then the computer you have is probably stolen.

You cannot this is a one time only deal done at the factory or if you were to replace the motherboard. Once you miss the service registration screen that only comes up the first time the board is booted. the service tag cannot be entered.

Until you have an exact, valid service tag AND you have registered it with Dell, DO NOT set a password or use the fingerprint reader.  If something goes wrong or you lose the password and you are not the registered owner of the system, you will be completely out of luck.

Hello - thanks for the info.  I have checked the dell site and it is a valid tag number.  It does not match exactly - but is fairly close - I was told that this computer has had some components replaced/updgraded.  How do I enter the service tag and express service code into my computers BIOS now.

Thanks,

Ok - I went out to the dell site and entered the service tag and express service code information into the "ownership transfer" section. It came back and said it was successfully transfered. It now shows up along with the other 2 dell systems under "my products" list when I log into my account.  I know that I can enter the Service Tag in BIOS when I press F2 to enter the config screens while booting ( it is currently blank).  It does give me a warning that you can only do this once so I have not entered anything in yet.  But does anyone know where I can enter  the express service code information?  thanks
