Shell32.dll is not valid and cannot boot my computer

Hello all,

I cannot reboot my computer because shell32.dll is missing. The screen message said " The application or DLL C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll is not a valid windows image. Please Check this against your installation diskette. The logon User interface DLL msgina.dll failed to load" . I cannot even start with SAFE MODE and Prompt Command."  My computer model is Dell XPS M140 and Windows XP Media Center 2005. I am really appreciated If anyone could help me how I can boot my compter without having to reformat my hard Disk or restore the original system. I have a lot of value information that I do not want to loose. Thanks in advance.

1. Copy the shell32.dl_ file to a floppy.
2. Go into BIOS, and make sure the CD-ROM drive is listed ahead of the HD as a boot device.
3. Access the recovery console, and choose the 1st repair option.
4. At the command prompt type "dir C:\windows\system /p" (without the ") and press Enter.
5. If the shell32.dll file is listed in the system folder, then at the command prompt type "Rename C:\Windows\system\shell32.dll shell32.old" (without the "), and press Enter. ( Note: If the shell32.dll file is not listed in the system folder, then repeat step 4, except type "dir C:\windows\system32 /p" )
6. Insert the floppy that has the shell32.dl_ file.
7. At the command prompt type "Copy A:\shell32.dl_ C:\Windows\system" and press Enter (Note: type C:\windows\system32 if the shell32.dll file was found in the system32 folder in step 5)
8. Remove the floppy and CD, and restart the computer.

Ronss,

Thank you very much for your advise. The problem is my computer xps M140 dell does not come with system recovery CD. It is installed in internal hard drive. Do you think I need to buy the CD from Dell?

You're meant to create a recovery CD/DVD using the files in the recovery partition Bruce.
I don't know if there's a specific 'how to' on the Dell website (do a search), but you'll find an article on creating a standard Vista (SP1) recovery disc here meantime ;)
