I might have formated it about 3 times already and installed many drivers but nothing is working to make the driver work. Right now I getting Code 10 error.
I need this to be fix for my little daughter, she love music and all her kid vidio in you tube are not working that making her upset. Please help me.

After you have performed an Operating System re-installation install the audio driver following this order of installation:
1. Open Windows Explorer and go to c:\Dell\drivers\R171789 and delete the R171789 folder. That is the current XP version of your audio driver.
2. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111and get the UAA patch. Install it and restart the computer. (If you have XP SP3 you can skip this step)
3. Download R171789 again or re-use the previous download if you still have it..
4. After it finishes extracting the files and begins to install, cance the installation.
5. Open Device Manager and expand System devices near the bottom. Find the PCI Device entry with a ? next to it. Go to the properties and choose to update the driver. Choose to manually find the driver and don't let Windows look for it.
Browse to c:\Dell\drivers\R171789\WDM
Windows should detect some new hardware and one of them should be the Sigmatel.

> After you installed XP did you install the Intel Mobile Chipset driver?
> When you were using 7, did you try to install the Vista version of the Sigmatel driver (R171786) by using Vista Compatibility mode?
> Check to make sure the audio Service is running. Go to Start/Run and type "services.msc" then hit the 'Enter' key (or click 'ok'). The Services window will appear. Scroll down until you find "Windows Audio" towards the bottom of the list. Check that it is enabled, set to automatic, and running. If it isn't, double click on it and change the Startup type to Automatic, then click Start, Apply, and OK.
If all of that checks out then you might be getting a code 10 due to hardware failure.

Hi Jim.
Yes i have installed all the drivers. I don't remember which driver was working when I was using the Win 7. But it was an upgrade from Vista to Win 7 not a fresh install.
Is there any way to check it this a Hardware failure. I don't have the dignostic CD to check the same. Is there any place where I can download the same to test the Hardware issue. If I can pin point the Issue then I can replace the same.
Thanks in advance.

Sam, there are only 3 ways I know of to definitively narrow it down to hardware vs software:
> Run the Dell Diagnostics audio tests. The link has a suggestion on how to install the utility.
> Restore the laptop back its original factory configuration. If the problem remains after doing it then it is the hardware.
> Replace the suspected part with a known working part. The suspected part in this case is the motherboard so this is not a practical method.
Another thing that suggests that it is a hardware problem is that the audio did not work in 7 either. In 7 you do not need to install the Sigmatel driver because 7 contains a basic HD audio driver, so it is doubtful that the no audio problem was caused by being unable to install the Sigmatel.

Hi Jim,
After reinstalling Windows 7 today on my Inspiron 1420 laptop, When I play audio files, there is no sound coming from the speakers.
The sound icon when right click, I see three playback devices:
1. Digital Output Device (SPDIF) and the sign "Working"
2. Speakers (High Definition Audio Device" and the sign "Not plugged in" and an red arrow down)
3. Headphone (High Definition Audio Device" and the sign "Not plugged in" and an red arrow down)
When I play a music I can see the green light going up and down. But no Sound.
I tried to (re)-install the Sigma Tel Audio Driver ( downloaded from the dell website), but I could not finish installation getting the following message: "Exit:Error=Device Object not present, restart the system and run again".
Please, tell me what else I can try.

Sam, it is not looking good. I wouldn't bother with the Sigmatel driver right now. If it won't work with the basic HD driver then it isn't going to work.
Look at the sound properties:
Because you don't have the Sigmatel driver installed, yours just says "High Definition Audio Device" without the word "Sigmatel". That is normal and means that the basic HD audio driver in Windows is installed. Try right clicking in the white area and then select to show disconnected and disabled devices. If you are unable to select and enable the speakers by doing that then I doubt that there is anything else you can do.
You could still get audio by attaching a spdif device (since spdif appears to be working) or an external sound card, but you will not get audio from the computer's speakers. You would need headphones or external speakers.
