The Dell audio drivers do not allow for playback of the microphone audio while you are recording. If you use the "line in" port you should be able to do what you are trying though.
Unfortunately the answer does not match my question (probably I could not explain the problem correctly - German speaker, sorry). Another approach:
When the Latitude is docked, everything is fine: I plug the output of my CD Player into the docking stations's line-in jack, get a volume control for line-in in the mixer, and can hear the music ´through my Latitude's internal speakers.
When the Latitude is undocked, I put the jack into the microphone input at the right side of the laptop, and hear nothing. This is new, I used that input many times before. When I bring up the mixer, there is neither a control for microphone, nor for line-in. Master, wave and synth work fine. There is a superfluous control for the "Dock CD" device.
Neither line-in nor microphone can be selected if I go to the "options" - "properties" dialog of the mixer where I can select and deselect the display of the various controls. When swicthing to "recording" I can select the microphone, and indeed record music to disk (which is not what I want, but it prooves that electronically the microphone/line-in input does work correctly).
So the question remains: how can I bring back the vanished volume control for the line-in/microphone jack when my laptop isn't in the docking station?
