this is not a response to your post. this is me being in agreement with you because I got the 1537 a few weeks ago and want to know what direction to take to up grade.

this is from a site chat forum

Salutations Everyone,

I just managed to get a hand me down Studio 1535 and upgraded it to a 1537 mobo and was wondering what you all thought about CPUs and RAM.. I want a 3GHz CPU and found the Intel Core 2 Duo E8435 @ 3.06GHz with a lovely 6M cache on Ebay.. Will it fit in this old thing?? And what do we do about RAM? This new board can do 8GB of ram and I want to go whole hog... so it will be capable of even gaming and things like SL when I'm away from the house... and so it can at least TRYYYYYY to keep up with my 8-core super-wonder beast of a tower. * chuckles *

It has a POS T5350 it it atm with only 3GB of PC5300 RAM.. the mobo model number is a 0P173H A11. How do I determine if it is a GS45 or a GM45 chipset? I've been digging, but that info currently eludes me..

TIA and Namaste...

Dhulan

The Studio 1537 motherboard should probably have a PM45 chipset. The E8435 is from a set of mobile form factor CPUs designed for iMacs... they will physically fit in the 1537, but they may not actually work. If they do, they may melt your computer or do other bad things because the rated TDPs are 55W. I would not recommend getting one.

Try for a T9800 or T9900, which are practically the same thing with a conventional mobile TDP.

As for the RAM, I think the official limit is 4GB, even though the chipset supports 8... in practice 8 will probably work, but a quick Google search couldn't confirm that anyone had done it successfully yet.
