Studio 1558 black screen
I've posted about this before, but considered it resolved when i ordered a new motherboard. Here's my issue.
I have a Dell Studio 1558, 6GB Windows 7HP 64bit. It's out of warranty. My initial issue was a graphics card failure, as it displayed distorted graphics and eventually just stopped displaying anything. By distorted I mean, bands of bright colors, checkerboard patterns, randonm characters displayed. the picture was still bright, so i figured it was the GPU dying.
I have replaced the motherboard and the problem remains. machine powers up, optical drive and HDD both start up, screen lights, keyboard backlight lights, but nothing is displayed on the screen, no bios, no start-up, no system beep. i have tried pressing the power button and "d" at the same time and the screen flashes white, then runs through the RGB flashes, so it's not the screen. I was able to place my HDD in an enclosure and access both partitions from my desktop, so the HDD hasn't failed.
Is there anything else i can do to test it to narrow the problem?

Hi Guys,
Dell studio 1558 is a complete failed product as it has known issue of GPU heating up and frequent shutdown. if you are still under warranty go and get it replace, test 1000 times again playing video games if it fails again then send it back again n again until ur warrnty get exhausted. I have same dell studio 1558 and it has started going off on , frequent shutdown, graphic driver failure, color bars all related to GPU. I contacted tech team they told me clearly they dont have h/w part to replace as they dont manufacture it any more so buy it from local h/w shop and get it fix urself..!
so guys pay someone to procure repaired motherboard from mkt n take risk otherwise throw it in bin...
good luck

Check the cable that runs between the screen and mainboard for damage. Even if it's not visibly damaged, the next step would be to replace it.

Hi Saichen,
You can check if the issue is with the cable that runs between the screen and the motherboard as suggested by ejn63 by connecting an external monitor to the VGA port. You will need to replace the cable if the display appears on the external monitor.
I suggest you to run the hardware diagnostics by holding the "Fn" button and then press the "Power" button. The diagnostics will emit beep codes based on the errors encountered during the test.
Please let me know about your findings.

only external cable i have at the moment is an HDMI, when i plugged it into my TV/monitor, the tv reported no signal from the laptop. do i need to try it with a vga? (I have another moniter, i just need to dig it out)
when running the hardwear diagnositc, i held Fn for what seemed to me to be a long time before i got any beeps. it emitted a regular series of 3 ascending beeps. nothing else.

Hi Saichen,
Thank you for your reply and for providing an update on the status. 3 beeps indicate motherboard failure and it needs to be replaced.

thank you for your insight, i will be sending back the failure motherboard to the company i purchased it from. after reinstalling my old motherboard, i decided to run the same diagnostic on it. it is returning a beep sequence of 5-3-2-1. i looked up the dell beep codes and cannot find this on the chart. the first 5 beeps are rather musical if that means anything, it's my first time testing a dell like this.

an amendment, it codes (musically) 5-5-5 then 3-2-1. not sure if this is relevant, but all information seems relevant, haha.

Hi Saichen,
Thank you for your reply and for providing an update on the status. 2 Beeps indicate "No Memory Detected" and the rest indicate motherboard failure.
Please let me know if you need further information.

Hello sir, I'm facing exactly same problem. While I was using my laptop it suddenly showed colored bars and now refuses to start although I can hear the processor fan running and the optical drive click. I too have a dell studio 1558 with ATI Radeon 1GB graphics card .

I had, exactly the same problem. Overheating and cutting out pretty well from purchase. Putting on a cooling fan pad has probably extended its life to about 7 years which I still think is poor. Dell tried to blame the problems on upgrading to Windows 10
