Studio XPS 1340 Display Problems

I have a Studio XPS 1340 that developed a dead display last week.  In the middle of regular use, the display went completely dark, but the backlight still functions normally.  I figured this was a simple case of the display cable being worn down by opening and closing the lid repeatedly, but upon replacing that cable the display is still dead.  I can connect it to an external monitor and get a display, so that rules out a GPU issue.

What else could be the problem?  Not the display cable, not the power cable, and not the GPU itself.  What else is there that could be causing this?  The only thing I can think of would be that the LCD screen itself has died, but can someone offer any suggestions for what else I can try to rule out or verify a component?

I actually developed the same problem. I have a working display attached as well (via HDMI). However when I turn on or open the laptop the screen goes blank within 3 seconds (does yours not turn on at all or does it go blank following boot?).

If anyone has any ideas please post. Right now I'm leaning towards buying a netbook for class as opposed to a new display unless I know what the problem actually is.

was this issue ever fixed?

I'm having similar problem, but the display is not completely dead yet. Sometimes when I adjust the display angle it goes off. Then I close, reopen it and it works fine again. I assume the problem is with the sensor which checks if the lid is closed and eventually it will progress to the same state that you guys have.

my issue turned out that the backlight was not lighting correctly. if you look closely and can still see things displayed you probably have the same thing that being said it cost me about 150 to get it fixed at this point the XPS is probably a very old laptop consider straight replacing it

Same thing has happened.  The screen has gone black but if I shine a torch on the screen I can see my desktop.  Plugged it into TV and the display is fine.  Took the laptop to a chap around the corner, he "said" he put an inverter board in and the screen is still not working.  He said he cant find any refurbished screens so did I want a new screen.  Even then he said it may still not work.  So am a bit fed up.  Dell dont seem to have a spare parts company in the uk.  If you go on ebay there are lots of screens available but from the USA.  Where can you get a good Dell engineer who knows these machines.  We did run a diagnostic test but it didnt give us a validation code "whatever that is" so couldnt put it into the Support page, once we had put in the service tag number.  The other problem I had with my XPS 1340 was that once I had upgraded it from Vista to Windows 7, some drivers were not compatible.  I called Dell and they said it was only made for Vista not future OS.  It did work fine with Windows 7 but the graphics cards X2 can only be used as one now, not two as with Vista.  If anyone knows of a Dell parts company in the uk I would be interested to know.
